NFHCA Preseason Poll | Patriot League field hockey schedule
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Boston University will open its Patriot League field hockey era ranked in the top 20 as the Terriers came in at No. 16 in the Penn Monto / NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll on Tuesday.
The preseason favorite in the Patriot League, Boston University has a storied field hockey history that includes ten NCAA Tournament appearances and eight America East titles, and Head Coach Sally Starr has been there to oversee almost all of it as she enters her 33rd season at the helm.
BU returns an abundance of talent with senior Madeleine Hackett, juniors Anne Fruitema and Valentina Cerda Eimbcke and sophomores Rachel Coll and Katie Bernatchez joining preseason All-Patriot League selections sophomore Sofi Laurito and senior Ysi Schieb as accomplished players. The Terriers feature a stout defense that gave up only 27 goals in 18 contests last season.
North Carolina took the top spot in the rankings, followed by Maryland, Princeton, Connecticut and Syracuse in the top five.
Patriot League teams are scheduled for 18 non-League contests against teams ranked in the preseason top 20, with three of those coming on the opening weekend. Bucknell takes on No. 13 Iowa on Friday at Lafayette, while the Leopards will host the Hawkeyes on Sunday when American also heads to No. 8 Old Dominion.
The top four teams in the Patriot League preseason poll account for all of the contests against top 20 squads. BU has six games against teams in the NFHCA preseason poll, while American, Lafayette and Bucknell each play four, excluding their matchup with the Terriers. Seven of the 18 contests come against top 10 opponents.
The field hockey season opens on Friday, with all seven teams playing at least one contest on the first weekend. Colgate's matchup with Rider on Friday and Boston University's Saturday date with Ohio and Monday contest against Delaware will all be available on Patriot League Network
