American Opens at No. 19 in NFHCA Ranking

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Defending Patriot League champion American University came in at No. 19 in the Penn Monto / NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll on Tuesday with the field hockey season set to open this weekend.

The Eagles garnered 186 points to earn the No. 19 spot, just one below where they finished at the end of the 2013 regular season.

American returns three All-Patriot League players from last season in first-team pick Grace Wilson and second-team selections Carly Atchison and Rebecca Treharne. The Eagles finished 15-6 last season with a 6-0 Patriot League mark and earned their ninth League title in 11 years.

Maryland ranked first in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Poll, followed in order by North Carolina, Connecticut, Duke and Syracuse. The full top 20 is available here

Patriot League teams have 18 games scheduled against non-League opponents that placed in the preseason top 20. Three of those come on the opening weekend as Boston University hosts No. 14 Northwestern on Friday, Lafayette takes on No. 13 Boston College on Saturday and No. 19 American hosts No. 9 Old Dominion on Sunday.
