HAMILTON, N.Y. -
Savannah Graybill and Rachel Carney scored off of a pair of penalty corners 52 seconds apart as the No. 20 American University field hockey team extended its winning streak to three, beating Colgate, 2-0, in Patriot League action on Saturday.
American (6-5, 2-0 PL) got its first goal at 11:25 as Graybill scored her fourth of the year off a penalty corner. Anne Van Erp inserted the corner and Anne-Meike DeWiljes set up Graybill on the stick-stop, who made no mistake beating Raiders keeper Sarah Pedersen. American added an insurance goal at 12:33 as Carney redirected a shot off of a penalty corner attempt. The goal marked the first-ever goal scored by the junior.
American outshot Colgate 20-9 in the contest. Alyssa Poorman made two saves in goal in the shutout, while Pedersen made six stops for Colgate.
"I think we did a good job controlling the play in the early stages of the game," said AU head coach Steve Jennings. "We were able to force a lot of turnovers and our pressure worked well to stop Colgate's attack. Tomorrow is a big game (against No. 2 Syracuse), so we are looking forward to building from today's success."
The Eagles will get started at 2 p.m. tomorrow against the Orange in Syracuse.
