WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior guard Alex Smith was one of 52 Division I Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) nominees selected for the Allstate Good Works Team®, it was announced on Tuesday.
In its second year, the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team® honors players at all levels of college basketball who represent the sport's finest in the areas of leadership and charitable achievements amongst their peers. The student-athletes nominated for this prestigious award embody the true spirit of teamwork and giving back. A total of 84 women's basketball players from all levels of collegiate play were listed as nominees for the Allstate Good Works Team®.
Smith is a two-time co-captain and has been a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy for three years. She has also been heavily involved in the Worcester community. She serves as the coordinator of Holy Cross' participation in Team Impact and also makes weekly visits to the Parsons Hill Nursing Home in Worcester to interact, play games and talk with senior citizens. This past summer, Smith worked as a summer youth volunteer coordinator intern at the United Way in Worcester. At the internship, she coordinated 13 volunteer events in the Worcester community while managing over 40 youths from 13-17 years old. Smith also plays a vital role in organizing annual events with the team, such as Holy Cross Cares Day, the Mercy Center Basketball Game and the Walk to Cure Cancer.
A Psychology major with a minor in American Sign Language, Smith holds a 3.38 grade-point average. During the 2012-2013 season, she was one of six players named to the Academic All-Patriot League team. She was also a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
This season, Smith is averaging 16.6 points, 5.8 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game, while shooting at a 53.4 percent clip from the field (31 of 58). She recently became Holy Cross' all-time three-pointers made record holder, as she now has 278 in her career. As of Dec. 1, Smith also leads the country with a 4.38-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio and ranks ninth in the nation with 3.6 three-pointers made per game.
From the 84 WBCA nominees submitted by coaches and sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, special voting panels will select one 10-member team comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA® Division I level and five student-athletes from NCAA® Divisions II, III and the NAIA.
