CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Jade Geif led Navy with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Alix Membreno pitched in 18 points and six steals to guide the Mids to a 57-48 win over East Carolina in the first day of the Navy Classic Friday.
The Mids (5-3) will play High Point Saturday at 6 p.m. in the championship game.
While Geif and Membreno paced Navy offensively, it was a stifling team defense that ultimately was the difference. The Mids went without a field goal for the game's final 5:52, but they shot 8 of 14 from the foul line during that stretch to stave off the Pirates' comeback attempt.
Navy led 20-18 at halftime, and the second half went back and forth. The Mids built a 43-33 advantage, but the Pirates inched back within four on three occasions. The final time was with less than a minute left with Navy leading 51-47. Geif sank two free throws to extend Navy's lead to six and essentially ice the game.
Navy shot 42 percent (19 of 45) from the field, but only connected on 3 of their 15 attempts from beyond the arc. It converted 18 Pirate turnovers into 17 points.
Saturday's slate is one of the busiest of the season to date. In addition to Navy's 6 p.m. tip with High Point, Colgate opens the list of games at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart. There are two games at 2 p.m., with American at Loyola Maryland and Lafayette welcoming Pittsburgh to Easton, Pa. Army puts its five-game win streak on the line at 3 p.m. against Yale. Holy Cross plays the first of eight straight on the road at 4 p.m. versus Manhattan. The final tip off of the night is slated for 7 p.m., with Bucknell hosting Buffalo at Davis Gym.
