Patriot League Women's Basketball Release 12.1.08

Center Valley, Pa.Holy Cross junior Briana McFadden, the Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year, lived up to her billing in two games last week. She averaged 25.5 points per game, helping the Crusaders record their first win of the season. Holy Cross, which edged Missouri, 94-93, in triple overtime, will now shift its attention to top-ranked Connecticut. The teams will meet Wednesday in Storrs, Conn. Elsewhere in the League, Lehigh extended its winning streak to four games with a pair of victories last week. The Mountain Hawks now own a League-best 5-1 mark.

Baden Player of the Week (Nov. 24-Nov. 30)

Briana McFadden Jr., G, Wheaton, Md.

McFadden averaged 25.5 points per game in the Crusaders' two contests at the 2008 DoubleTree White Invitational. She scored a career-high 31 points in the Crusaders' 94-93 triple overtime victory over Missouri, surpassing her previous career high of 28 points. McFadden was 4-of-8 from three-point range and 9-of-10 from the free throw line in Saturday's win. She also logged a career-high 54 minutes against the Tigers. She followed her Saturday effort with 20 points, three rebounds and three assists against Western Illinois on Sunday. McFadden, who was named to the 2008 DoubleTree White Invitational All-Invite Team, has now scored at least 20 points in each of her last four games. It is the first time this season and the second occasion in her career that McFadden, the Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year, has been named Patriot League Player of the Week.

Baden Rookie of the Week (Nov. 17-Nov. 23)

Patricia Oakes, Colgate Fr., C, Evergreen, Colo.

Oakes registered back-to-back double-digit scoring outputs while also helping Colgate notch its second win of the season. Oakes averaged 12 points and 5.3 rebounds in three games last week. She provided the Raiders with a career-high seven rebounds in Colgate's loss at Presbyterian. She contributed a career-high 16 points in the Raiders' 48-46 triumph over Albany. She added six rebounds against the Great Danes. She concluded her week with a 12-point effort against Detroit Mercy. Oakes was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line during the week. She is the second Colgate player to be named Patriot League Rookie of the Week this season, joining teammate Candice Green, who won the award following the first week of the season.

Honorable Mention Performances Last Week

Liz Leer, American So., F, Abington, Pa.

Leer averaged 16 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games last week. Against Morgan State, she posted career-highs with 14 rebounds and six blocks. She also matched a career-high with 18 points against the Bears. Her 14 rebounds were the highest total for an Eagle since 2006 and her six blocks tied a school record.

Joyce Novacek, Bucknell So., F, Aliquippa, Pa.

Novacek averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds per contest in two games last week. Aagainst Loyola, Novacek produced season-highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds. For the week, she shot .480 from the field.

Erica Prosser, Lehigh So., G, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Prosser averaged 18 points, 2.5 steals and two assists in a pair of Lehigh victories last week. She made 53.8 percent of her three-point attempts, including a 4-of-7 effort against Sacred Heart. She finished with a career-high 21 points against the Pioneers.

Cassie Consedine, Navy So., C, Bartlesville, Okla.

Consedine averaged a double-double in three games last week. She contributed 12 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest for the Mids. In Navy's win over St. Francis (Pa.), Consedine set a career-high with 24 points, tied a career-high with 13 rebounds and finished with six blocks, one short of a career-high. Her double-double against the Red Flash was her second double-double of the season. She has three or more blocks in three of the last four games.

Patriot League Notebook

The Week In Review Lehigh picked up a pair of victories last week to improve to 5-1. The Mountain Hawks have now won four straight games after disposing of Sacred Heart and Princeton. Bucknell's undefeated record slipped away with a pair of losses. The Bison fell to 3-2 with losses to Drexel and Loyola (Md.). American dropped a 57-54 decision at Morgan State, but remained unbeaten at home with a 77-59 win over Cleveland State. Navy evened its record at 4-4 after going 2-1 last week. The Mids have won two straight games after claiming victories over St. Francis (Pa.) and Delaware State. Army split two contests last week, falling on the road to St. John's before topping rival Air Force in Colorado Springs on Saturday. Colgate surpassed its win total from a year ago with its 48-46 win over Albany. Lafayette and Holy Cross both picked up their first wins of the season. The Leopards outlasted Texas Pan-Am, 57-51, while Holy Cross edged Missouri in triple overtime, 94-93.

On Deck Lehigh will look to extend its four-game winning streak in a Tuesday contest at Syracuse. Bucknell will seek an end to its two game skid with a Wednesday bout against Towson. American will spend Tuesday in Princess Anne, Md. for a match-up against Maryland-Eastern Shore. Navy will make the short trip to Baltimore for a Wednesday pairing with UMBC. Army will attempt to build on its recent win at Air Force with a home contest against Albany. Colgate will open the week on Monday at Wagner. Lafayette will be busy in the early part of the week, traveling to Marist on Monday before hosting Penn on Wednesday. Holy Cross will battle top-ranked Connecticut in Storrs on Wednesday.

Team Notebooks

American The Eagles lost on the road to Morgan State but rebounded to claim a 77-59 home win against Cleveland State. The Eagles have yet to lose at home this season. Talicia Jackson hit four three-pointers during last week's action to move within 21 of the school record for career three-pointers. The 4-3 Eagles will head to Maryland-Eastern Shore for a Tuesday match-up.

Army The Black Knights are 2-4 at the start of December after splitting a pair of road games last week. Army fell, 61-54, to St. John's before topping rival Air Force in Colorado Springs, 54-44. The Black Knights committed a season-low 12 turnovers while dishing out 14 assists in the win over Air Force. Army will host Albany on Wednesday evening.

Bucknell After opening the season with three straight wins, the Bison have now lost two straight. Bucknell dropped both its games last week, falling to Drexel and Loyola (Md.). Senior guard Amanda Brown scored her 1,000th career point in the loss to Loyola. Brown now has 1,002 points as a Bison. Bucknell will seek to end its two-game skid with a home game against Towson on Wednesday.

Colgate The Raiders surpassed their win total from a year ago with a 48-46 triumph over Albany. Colgate, which went 1-2 last week, is 2-5 heading into the week. In the Raiders' loss to Detroit Mercy, sophomore Georgia Gier recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Colgate will open the week on Monday at Wagner.

Holy Cross The Crusaders claimed their first win of the season in dramatic fashion. Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Briana McFadden scored 31 points, including the game-winning shot with eight seconds remaining, to help Holy Cross beat Missouri in triple overtime, 94-93, in the opening round of the DoubleTree White Invitational. The Crusaders were topped by Western Illinois in the second round, 64-55. Holy Cross will battle top-ranked Connecticut in Storrs on Wednesday. The game will be televised on CPTV.

Lafayette The Leopards picked up their first win of the season with a 57-51 triumph over Texas Pan-Am. In a pair of games last week, senior guard Cristin Zavocki hit six three-pointers. Lafayette will be busy in the early portion of the week. The Leopards will travel to Marist for a Monday night game before hosting Penn on Wednesday. The Leopards' Wednesday game against the Quakers will be televised by LSN.

Lehigh The Mountain Hawks extended their winning streak to four games with wins over Sacred Heart and Princeton. Lehigh claimed a slight 77-75 victory over the Pioneers in Fairfield, Conn. before topping Princeton at home, 63-43. The Mountain Hawks are 5-1 for the first time since the 1995-96 campaign. Lehigh will put its winning streak on the line Tuesday at Syracuse.

Navy The Mids evened their record at 4-4 after going 2-1 last week. Navy dropped a 64-58 overtime decision to Dayton before rattling off consecutive wins over St. Francis (Pa.) and Delaware State. After recording 10 blocked shots last week, sophomore center Cassie Consedine vaulted from sixth place to third in Navy history for career blocked shots. She has 92 career blocks in just 37 games. Navy will look to move above .500 with Wednesday showdown against UMBC.
