CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Patriot League members American University and Lehigh University were recognized today as two of the top 25 programs on the NCAA Division I Academic Honor Roll, announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association earlier today.
The WBCA Academic Top 25 annually recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA; and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined grade point average (GPA) inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2013-14 season is the 19th in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.
The Eagles, under first-year coach Megan Gebbia, were 13th list with a 3.510 overall GPA. American won 22 games during the 2013-14 season and earned a bid to the Women's National Invitational Tournament. Nine players on the squad made the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll announced last month.
Lehigh finished in the 17th spot on the list with a 3.451 GPA and makes the WBCA Top 25 for the second straight season under 19-year head coach Sue Troyan. The Mountain Hawks placed a league-high 12 members on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
The University of Missouri-Kansas City led all Division I programs with a 3.628 GPA. A team's GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans.
