WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American University Department of Athletics has announced a five-year contract extension for Head Women's Basketball Coach Matt Corkery, which runs through the 2016-17 season. In his four years at American, Corkery owns the best career winning percentage in Patriot League history.

"I am very excited to receive the support of the athletics administration at American University to continue the winning tradition we have built," remarked Corkery. "This five-year contract extension will allow our staff to recruit student-athletes who want to make sure a coaching staff is in place for their entire playing careers. I am grateful to all of the players, alumni, coaches and support staff that help make American University a special place to play women's basketball."

"We are thrilled to sign Matt's contract extension to ensure that he will lead our women's basketball program for many years to come," added Keith Gill, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "Matt has led the women's basketball team to sustained success both on the court and in the classroom, and we are excited for the future of the program."

Corkery has guided the Eagles to an 86-39 record in his four seasons as head coach at American, including a 46-10 mark in Patriot League play. His .688 overall winning percentage and .821 conference winning percentage are both the best in Patriot League history. Corkery has been honored as the Patriot League Coach of the Year in two of the last three seasons as he has led AU to three straight conference regular season titles. The Eagles have also reached two Patriot League Championship Games in Corkery's tenure and have recorded three WNIT berths.

The 2011-12 season was a historic one for Corkery as American finished with a 14-0 record in conference play, becoming the first-ever school to finish with a perfect mark since the Patriot League expanded to eight teams in 2001-02. The Eagles put together a program-record 15-game winning streak during the campaign en route to a 23-8 record, which matched the AU record for most single-season victories.

Corkery was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year in both 2010 and 2012, and has had two Patriot League Players of the Year under his watch, including most recently Lisa Strack in 2012. Seven-student-athletes have been selected as All-Patriot League and four have been named to the All-Rookie Team. Additionally, 21 student-athletes have been honored on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll through his first three seasons, and Alexis Dobbs was named the league's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2012.

Corkery has served on the AU women's basketball staff since 2004 when he was hired as an assistant coach. In 2007, he was elevated to the program's associate head coach before being promoted to head coach in 2008. Prior to arriving at American, Corkery coached at West Texas A&M, Howard (Texas), Stephen F. Austin, and Emporia State.
