COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Collegiate head coaches Stefanie Pemper of the U.S. Naval Academy and Jackie Carson of Furman University today were announced as court coaches for the 2014 USA Basketball Women's U18 National Team Trials, which will take place May 23-27 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Pemper and Carson will assist the USA Women's U18 National Team coaching staff in leading drills, skills sessions and scrimmages. The USA U18 National Team will be led by Dawn Staley (University of South Carolina), with assistant coaches Kim Barnes Arico (University of Michigan) and Jeff Walz (University of Louisville). Approximately 35 players are expected to attend trials, and players eligible for this competition must have been born on or after Jan. 1, 1996.
Pemper, who has been head mentor for the Navy women's basketball team for six seasons, led her 2013-14 squad to a 24-8 record which was a school-record for wins, and a WNIT appearance, and she was named the 2014 Patriot League Coach of the Year.
"It's a thrill and an honor," Pemper said. "It has always been a dream of mine to be involved with USA Basketball, and anything I can do to help Dawn Staley, Carol Callan and the staff, I will do enthusiastically. It's an absolute first class organization that is working hard to grow the American game, and I'm going to appreciate every part of this experience."
Carson recently completed her fourth year at the helm of Furman University, where she led her team to an 18-13 record and a WNIT appearance in 2013-14.
"I am extremely honored to be selected as a court coach for USA Basketball trials," Carson said. "Being part of the rich tradition of USA Basketball in any capacity is a dream come true and a tremendous opportunity to learn from the best coaches and players in the field. I look forward to assisting the coaching staff in assembling another USA Basketball championship team."
At the conclusion of trials on May 26, the 12-member roster for the 2014 USA Women's U18 National Team will be selected by the USA Junior National Team Committee, and all players will return home.
The team will return to Colorado Springs at the end of July to train in advance of the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, which will be played Aug. 6-10 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
The tournament will feature eight national teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean, and the top four finishing teams will qualify for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women.
