Center Valley, Pa.—American University junior Michelle Kirk was voted the 2010 Patriot League Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, it was announced Tuesday during the Women's Basketball Tournament media teleconference. Also announced during the call were the winners of the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year, as well as the 2010 All-Patriot League teams.

 

Kirk was voted Patriot League Player of the Year after leading the Patriot League in scoring with 18.1 points per outing. She also hauled in 5.2 rebounds per contest. Kirk scored a career-high 32 points in American’s Jan. 9 victory over Lehigh. She has 507 points this season, making her the fourth player in school history to reach the 500-point mark in a season. Kirk was also named a First-Team All-Patriot League selection for the second consecutive season. The junior is the first Eagle to be named Patriot League Player of the Year since American joined the Patriot League in 2001-02.

Kirk’s coach, Matt Corkery, was honored as well. In his second season as the head coach of the Eagles, Corkery was tabbed Patriot League Coach of the Year. Corkery is the second coach in American history to be named Patriot League Coach of the Year, joining former Eagles’ coach Melissa McFerrin. Corkery led American to a 13-1 Patriot League record, tying Lehigh for the top spot in the League. The Eagles finished the regular season with a 20-8 record under Corkery’s guidance, marking just the fourth 20-win season in program history.

Receiving Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second season in a row was Navy junior Angela Myers. Myers ranks third in the Patriot League in steals and eighth in rebounding. The 5’5” point guard has compiled 58 thefts this season and ranks 27th on the Patriot League career steals list. Myers is the first player in Patriot League history to receive back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Colgate’s Jhazmine Lynch was voted the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, marking the first time a Raider has received the award. During Patriot League play, Lynch led her team in scoring with 9.3 points per outing. She also registered 23 assists and 17 steals during League play, helping Colgate record its best Patriot League record since 2005-06. Lynch was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week three times during the season.

Joining Kirk as a First-Team All-Patriot League selection is her teammate Liz Leer. Also chosen as First-Team All-Patriot League honorees were Myers, Army’s Erin Anthony and Lehigh’s Emily Gratch and Erica Prosser. Six student-athletes were named First-Team All-Patriot League selections due to ties in the voting.

Chosen as Second-Team All-Patriot League selections were Bucknell’s Trisha Krewson, Holy Cross’ Whitney Fremeau and Briana McFadden, Lafayette’s LaKeisha Wright and Lehigh’s Alex Ross.

Joining Lynch on the All-Rookie Team are Army’s Molly Yardley, Bucknell’s Rachel Voss, Holy Cross’ Amy Lepley and Navy’s Chey Arvin.

Leer leads the Patriot League with 62 blocked shots, including 35 in League play. She has provided American with 12.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. It is the first time Leer has been named to the All-Patriot League Team.

Anthony was named a First-Team All-Patriot League selection a year after being named to the Second Team. She is the only Patriot League player averaging a double-double as she has produced 16.2 and 10.4 rebounds per outing. She ranks second in the Patriot League with 50 blocked shots.

Gratch and Prosser are two of Lehigh’s League-high three All-Patriot League selections. Gratch was named to the All-Patriot League Team for the first time in her career after averaging a team-leading 13.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game during Patriot League competition. Prosser was voted a First-Team All-Patriot League selection for the second consecutive season after collecting a League-best 80 steals, including 40 in Patriot League play. She also leads the Patriot League with 127 assists, dishing out 53 in League contests. For the season, Prosser averages 14.1 points per game. She produced 11.8 points per outing against Patriot League foes.

Myers’ selection marks the first time she has been named to the All-Patriot League Team. She is the first First-Team All-Patriot League selection from Navy since Carly Meyer received the honor in 2007. Myers leads the Mids in points, assists, steals, field goal percentage and minutes while ranking second in rebounding.

A year after being named Patriot League Rookie of the Year, Krewson received Second-Team All-Patriot League accolades. She led the Bison and ranked third in the Patriot League with 14.0 points per game in League action. She also led Bucknell with 2.0 assists per League contest.

McFadden was selected to the All-Patriot League Team for the third consecutive season. She averaged 11.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game during Patriot League play. Her teammate, Fremeau, was voted to the All-Patriot League team for the first time in her career. During Patriot League play, Fremeau led her team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounding (5.5 rpg).

Also named to the All-Patriot League team for the first time in her career was Wright. The Lafayette junior averaged 11.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game during Patriot League play. She also leads her team in steals and ranks second in assists.

Like McFadden, Ross was tabbed an All-Patriot League performer for the third time in her career. She has been named a Second-Team All-Patriot League selection in each of the past three seasons. Just 22 players have received All-Patriot League recognition at least three times. Ross currently holds the Patriot League record for career three-pointers with 279. She has made a League-leading 69 three-pointers this season. She has averaged 10.9 points per game during Patriot League play.

Yardley becomes the 10th player in Army history to be named to the All-Rookie Team. She averaged 6.3 points and 1.9 rebounds during Patriot League play.

Voss has produced 6.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per outing during her freshman campaign, making her the 16th All-Rookie Team selection from Bucknell.

Lepley scored 34 points during the final week of Patriot League play, including a career-high 20 points against Colgate. Lepley has averaged 7.7 points during Patriot League play. She was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week six times during the season.

Arvin rounds out the All-Rookie Team. She was selected after averaging 5.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per outing.

The All-Patriot League Team and major awards are voted on by the League's eight head coaches, who are not eligible to vote for their own student-athletes or themselves.

The 2010 Patriot League Tournament will begin Saturday with all eight teams competing in Worceser, Mass. The semifinals will be held the following day in Worcester, with the championship round being played on March 13 at the site of the highest remaining seed. The championship will be televised by CBS College Sports Network.
