CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - A pair of student-athletes from service academies were recognized with Anaconda weekly honors in Patriot League women's basketball Monday, as Navy junior Jade Geif was named Player of the Week and Army's Kelsey Minato was named Rookie of the Week for the period from Jan. 21-27.
Geif claimed her second honor of the season after averaging 16.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists during a 2-0 week for the Mids. Navy defeated American 61-42 Wednesday and won at Colgate 59-43 Saturday. All four of the Mids' League wins have been by double figures.
Minato continued her domination of the rookie award, capturing her third straight and sixth of the season. She averaged 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game during the Black Knights' 1-1 week, which featured a 51-48 win Wednesday at home over Colgate.
Wednesday's slate features four games, with American at Bucknell, Lafayette going to Colgate, Army hosting Holy Cross and Navy visiting Lehigh. More information will be in Tuesday's weekly release.
ANACONDA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JADE GEIF, NAVY Jr., F, Lakeville, Minn.
Navy has won four of its last five and captured a pair of victories last week, and Geif was a big part of it. The junior from Lakeville, Minn., averaged 16.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 73.7 percent (14 of 19) from the field. She had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds in Wednesday's 61-42 victory over American, snapping the Eagles' 18-game win streak against League foes in the regular season. Saturday at Colgate, she had 17 points, nine boards and six dishes in the Mids' 59-43 triumph. In 84 career contests, Geif has scored in double figures 50 times. It's her second weekly honor of the season (Nov. 26).
ANACONDA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
KELSEY MINATO, ARMY Fr., G, Huntington Beach, Calif.
Minato captured her sixth Rookie of the Week accolade after averaging 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game for the Black Knights, who went 1-1. The rookie had 22 points and six boards and shot 8 of 12 from the field (including 4 of 7 from beyond the arc) in Wednesday's 51-48 victory at home over Colgate. She added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Army in its 45-42 loss at American Saturday afternoon. She shot 13 of 27 (48.1 percent) for the week, including at a 6-of-11 clip (54.5 percent) on 3-point attempts. Minato remains the League's leading scorer in conference play at 18.0 points per game.
AUDREY DOTSON, BUCKNELL So., F, Vienna, Va.
Averaged 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game during the Bison's 2-0 week. Narrowly missed double-double (10 points, nine rebounds) in Wednesday's 53-37 win at Lehigh. Added 14 points in Saturday's 62-59 victory over Holy Cross.
ALEX SMITH, HOLY CROSS Jr., G, Delran, N.J.
Shot 46.7 percent (7 of 15) from beyond the arc and averaged 14.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. Scored 17 points with seven boards in Saturday's 62-59 loss at Bucknell.
KELLY LOUGHNEY, LAFAYETTE Jr., F, Clinton, N.J.
Averaged 14.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, and shot 7 of 9 with 16 points in Saturday's 68-52 victory over Lehigh. Shot 57.1 percent (12 of 21) for the week.
KERRY KINEK, LEHIGH Fr., F, Whitehall, Pa.
Averaged 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds last week for the Mountain Hawks. Scored 18 points with nine boards Wednesday in 53-37 defeat to Bucknell.
