HAMILTON, N.Y. - Colgate men's soccer freshman Jimmy McLaughlin has signed with Major League Soccer club Philadelphia Union, it was announced Monday.

"Although we are disappointed to be losing such a great player, and a person of such high character, I could not be happier for Jimmy," stated head coach Erik Ronning. "He has worked very hard to get this opportunity, and I know he will be very successful with the Philadelphia Union."

McLaughlin, who was the 2011 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, saw action with the Union in a pair of friendly matchups against international top-tier clubs Everton and Real Madrid, as well as in a 1-1 draw with Reading United A.C. this past summer.

"My time here at Colgate has been something that I will treasure for my entire life," stated McLaughlin. "I've made friendships that will last a lifetime and have memories that I will never forget. Coach Ronning has not only helped me on the field as a player but has taught me priceless lifelong lessons. The Colgate soccer program has helped me improve my game and all my teammates have become great friends. I have really grown as a person over my time here and I truly appreciate the wonderful opportunities Coach Ronning has given me. Colgate is a very special place and it will always be a part of me."

The rookie completed his first collegiate season tied for fifth on the team with a game-winning goal and three assists. McLaughlin was a three-time rookie of the week and the only freshman and one of six players to play and start in all 22 games.

"Despite only being a part of Colgate Soccer for a short time, Jimmy's contributions to the program were significant on the field and in the community," Ronning said. "He was a huge part of our team's success this season in winning the Patriot League Championship and playing in the NCAA Tournament, and will always be a part of the Colgate soccer family. I wish him the best of luck as he embarks on this chapter in his life."

McLaughlin is the fourth Colgate men's soccer player since 2009 to enter the professional soccer ranks. Glenn Volk ('09) joined Bayamon F.C, Puerto Rico and the Louisville Lightning of the PASL, Alex Weekes ('10) was with the Pittsburgh River Hounds of the USL, and Chris Ross ('10) was drafted by Chivas USA in the 2010 MLS Super Draft.

"Over the past four years, Colgate soccer has not only been able to produce championship teams, but also a number of professional players," commented Ronning. "This is a testament to the developmental nature of this program, and the hard work our coaching staff and student athletes put forth year round. We have been able to recruit really good players and help make them great."
