Patriot League Men's Soccer Release- 11.10.08

Center Valley, Pa.- The Patriot League Men's Soccer Championship kicks off Friday when No. 4 Lafayette takes on No. 1 Colgate at 4 p.m. No. 3 Holy Cross will face No. 2 American in the second semifinal game at 7 p.m. The winners of each of the semifinals will advance to the championship match on Sunday at 1 p.m. Student-athletes from Colgate, Lafayette and American all won Patriot League BRINE Player of the Week honors.

BRINE  Offensive Player of the Week

Alex Weekes, Colgate Jr., M, Stroudsburg, Pa.

Weekes scored both goals for Colgate in its 2-0 win over Lehigh, a victory that secured the No. 1 seed in this weekend's Patriot League Tournament. Weekes leads the team in points (17), goals (6) and assists (5). This was the second straight week that Weekes scored the game-winner for the Raiders.

BRINE Defensive Player of the Week

Glenn Volk, Colgate Sr., D, Lexington, Ky.

Volk led Colgate's defense to a 2-0 shutout of Lehigh to earn the top seed in the Patriot League Tournament. It was the second consecutive week that Colgate shut out its Patriot League opponent. Volk has led the Raider defense to nine shutouts this season and a 0.69 goals-against average, the best in the League in both categories.

BRINE  Goalkeeper of the Week

Philip Nelson, Lafayette Jr., Attleboro, Mass.

Nelson made five saves in a double overtime tie with Holy Cross, ensuring that Lafayette would participate in its seventh straight Patriot League Tournament. Nelson made five saves in the match, including three in the opening half and a critical stop in the first overtime period. Lafayette now has a 0.94 goals-against average.

BRINE  Rookie of the Week

Jack Scott, American Fr., F, York, United Kingdom

Scott scored his fourth goal of the season, which tied him for the team lead, as he tallied the game-winning goal in the Eagles' 2-0 win at Army to clinch a post-season berth.

Tournament Field Set

Tournament Streaks

Lafayette is making its seventh-straight Patriot League Tournament appearance, tied with Holy Cross (1997-03) and Lehigh (2000-06) for the second longest streak behind Colgate's eight straight appearances from 1992-99. The Raiders are making their fourth consecutive appearance, while Holy Cross is making its second straight postseason appearance. American is in its first Patriot League Tournament since 2005.

Championships

The Raiders will look for their fourth overall and second consecutive crown under Head Coach Erik Ronning. Colgate won the title in 1992, 1997 and 2007. The Eagles are on the hunt for their third title, having won the Championship in 2001 and 2004 under Head Coach Todd West. Holy Cross hosted the tournament in 2007 and will look for its second Patriot League title under Head Coach Elvis Comrie. The Crusaders last won the championship in 2002. Lafayette has the most Patriot League titles in League history with six, and will look for its seventh championship.

Regular Season Matchups

American beat Holy Cross, 1-0, on Oct. 25, while Colgate defeated Lafayette by an identical score on Oct. 11. In potential Championship matchups, American tied Lafayette 1-1 on Oct. 4 while the Eagles were defeated by Colgate, 1-0 on Nov. 1. Holy Cross beat Colgate, 1-0 on Sept. 27 and the Crusaders had a scoreless tie with Lafayette on Nov. 8.

All-Time Tournament Records

In the Patriot League Tournament, No. 1Colgate is 1-2 all-time vs. Lafayette, 0-1 vs. American and has never met Holy Cross in the postseason. No. 2 American is 1-0 vs. Holy Cross, 1-0 vs. Colgate and 1-1 against Lafayette all-time in the Patriot League Tournament. Lafayette is 8-1 all-time against Holy Cross in the Tournament.

Army's Glubzinski Named Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Finalist

Army's A.J. Glubzinski is one of 10 finalists in the men's soccer division for the 2008 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Glubzinski's name has been placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote that began Oct. 16 and will conclude Nov. 19.

Team Notebooks

American

The Eagles will make their first Patriot League Tournament appearance since 2005 after beating Bucknell, 3-2, in double overtime. The Eagles are the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will square off with No. 3 seed Holy Cross at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Army

Army won its first Patriot League game of the season, defeating archrival Navy, 1-0 in the annual Star game. The Black Knights finished their season 3-14-0 overall and 1-6-0 in the Patriot League.

Bucknell

The Bison lost a double overtime heartbreaker, 3-2, to American on Saturday, eliminating them from the postseason. Bucknell finished the year 8-8-3 overall and 3-4-0 in the Patriot League.

Colgate

Colgate earned the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament with a 2-0 win over Lehigh. The Raiders will take on No. 4 Lafayette at 4 p.m. on Friday at Van Doren Field.

Holy Cross

The Crusaders earned the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament with a scoreless tie with Lafayette on Saturday. Holy Cross will take on American at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Lafayette

A scoreless tie with Holy Cross secured the seventh-straight postseason berth and No. 4 seed in this weekend's Patriot League Tournament. The Leopards will take on No. 1 seed Colgate at 4 p.m. on Friday in Hamilton.

Lehigh

The Mountain Hawks were eliminated from postseason play with a 2-0 loss to Colgate in Hamilton on Saturday. Lehigh finished the season 7-7-3 overall and 2-3-2 in Patriot League play.

Navy

The Mids lost their last game of the season to archrival Army, 1-0 in the annual Star game. Navy finished its season 4-11-3 and 0-6-1 in Patriot League play.
