Eight Patriot League Men's Soccer Student-Athletes Receive Academic All-District Honors

Center Valley, Pa. –Patriot League men's soccer student-athletes were recognized for accomplishments in the classroom and on the field on Thursday, as eight were selected to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams, including four First-Team honorees.

The Patriot League selections came in the University Division from District 1 and District 2, with student-athletes from Army, Colgate and Holy Cross placed in District 1 and those from Lehigh, Lafayette, American, Bucknell and Navy grouped into District 2.

Bucknell led all schools with three honorees, two of which received First-Team recognition. Colgate had two selections, while Army, Lafayette and Navy each had one student-athlete selected.

Bucknell placed seniors Sean King and Patrick Selwood on District 2 First Team, while Bison sophomore Tommy Caso was named to the Second Team. King, a midfielder, holds a 3.80 grade point average in economics. He has one goal and two assists this season. Selwood, a defender, has achieved a 3.72 GPA in philosophy and religion. He has anchored the Bison’s back line, helping Bucknell score twice as many goals as its foes this season. Caso, a mechanical engineering major, currently holds a 3.83 GPA. The Bison goalkeeper has allowed just 14 goals in 15 games this season while posting six shutouts.

Colgate produced a pair of District 1 Second-Team selections in junior Jeff Leach and senior Chris Ross. Both Leach and Ross are economics majors, with Leach holding a 3.75 GPA and Ross sporting a 3.37 GPA. Both rank in the top five in scoring on the Raiders’ roster this season. Leach has six points (one goal, four assists) while Ross has five points (two goals, one assist).

Army and Lafayette were each awarded one First-Team selection. Army senior Andrew Kydes was named to the District 1 First Team, while Lafayette senior Nick Leigh was placed on the District 2 First Team. Kydes, a defender, holds a 3.89 GPA in civil engineering. He has played in all 14 games for the Black Knights this season, registering one assist. Leigh, also a defender, holds a 3.65 GPA in biology. He has notched one assist while helping the Lafayette defense hold its foes to 0.88 goals per game.

Rounding out the selections is Navy’s Sam Miller. The sophomore midfielder was named a District 2 Second-Team selection.  He has played in 15 games for the Mids this season, notching one goal. Miller currently holds a 3.83 GPA in mechanical engineering.


 

 

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form. First-Team selections are eligible for Academic All-American status.
