Patriot League Men's Soccer Release 10.27.08

Center Valley, Pa.-Nobody has sealed a berth to the Patriot League Tournament just yet, but three teams have a shot at claiming a position this weekend. American, Holy Cross and Colgate, all tied for the League lead with 10 points, would clinch a berth if they win on Saturday and Lafayette or Lehigh loses or ties. Five Patriot League squads are ranked in the Oct. 28 NSCAA Middle Atlantic Regional Poll. Student-athletes from Lehigh and American all won BRINE Player of the Week awards.

BRINE Offensive Player of the Week

Adam Gazda, Lehigh Sr., M, Carnegie, Pa.

Gazda scored both goals in the 2-1 win over Penn State, and assisted on the game-winning goal against Army. Gazda's five points in last week's games helped keep the Mountain Hawks in the hunt for a spot in the Patriot League Tournament.

BRINE Defensive Player of the Week

Dor Yasur, American Jr., D, Boca Raton, Fla.

Yasur scored his first career goal at an opportune time, tallying the game-winner against Holy Cross, giving the Crusaders their first Patriot League loss of the season. Yasur's 35-yd strike gave the Eagles the 1-0 victory and left them the only unbeaten team in the Patriot League.

BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week

Matt Makowski, American Fr., Quakertown, Pa.

Makowski continued to impress in goal for the Eagles, recording his fifth shutout and third in conference play in the 1-0 win over Holy Cross. Makowski made four saves, including two in the final 20 minutes of play.

BRINE Rookie of the Week

Kevin Strunk, Lehigh Fr., M/D, Downington, Pa.

Strunk scored his first career goal in the 90th minute to notch a 1-0 win over Army on the road for the Mountain Hawks. Strunk was the beneficiary of teammate Adam Gazda's free kick from 40 yds out that went into the box, allowing Strunk to score on a header.

Three Teams Eying Tournament Berths

Nobody has sealed a berth to the Patriot League Tournament just yet, but three teams have a shot at claiming a position this weekend. American, Holy Cross and Colgate, all tied for the League lead with 10 points, would clinch a berth if they win on Saturday and Lafayette or Lehigh loses or ties. American is at Colgate in a matchup of League leaders, while Holy Cross hosts Army. Lehigh plays host to Bucknell and Lafayette visits Navy. Lehigh and Lafayette are currently tied for fourth place in the standings with eight points, while Bucknell is still right in the mix for a Tournament berth with six points.

Five Patriot League Teams In NSCAA Regional Poll

Five Patriot League squads are ranked in the Oct. 28 NSCAA Middle Atlantic Regional Poll. American is the top-ranked Patriot League squad, coming in at fourth in the region. The Eagles are followed by Holy Cross (fifth), Colgate (sixth), Lehigh (seventh) and Lafayette (ninth).

Army's Glubzinski Named Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Finalist

Army's A.J. Glubzinski is one of 10 finalists in the men's soccer division for the 2008 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Glubzinski's name has been placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote that began Oct. 16 and will conclude Nov. 19. Votes from coaches and media will be coupled with fan balloting to determine the recipient of the award. Fans can vote online during this time period at www.seniorclassaward.com. The winner will be announced during the NCAA Championship, December 12-14 in Frisco, Texas.

2008 Patriot League Tournament

The 2008 Patriot League Tournament will take place Friday and Sunday, November 14 and 16 at the site of the highest seed. The top four teams as determined by the regular-season standings will participate in the Patriot League tourney.

Team Notebooks

American

The Eagles came up with a big win last weekend, toppling then League-leading Holy Cross, 1-0. American will next hit the road to face No. 19 Virginia on Tuesday before resuming Patriot League play on Saturday at Colgate.

Army

Army is still looking for its first Patriot League points of the season after losing 1-0 to Lehigh on Friday. The Black Knights will look to improve their 2-11-0 overall record with games against Sacred Heart and Holy Cross this week.

Bucknell

The Bison defeated St. Peter's 3-1 on Wednesday before losing 2-1 to Lafayette. Bucknell is now 2-3-0 in Patriot League play and will take on NJIT at home on Tuesday before heading to Bethlehem to face Lehigh on Saturday night.

Colgate

Colgate went 1-0-1 on the week, defeating Cornell 2-0 in Hamilton and tying Patriot League opponent Navy, 1-1. The Raiders are 3-1-1 with 10 points in the Patriot League standings, and face Duke and American this week.

Holy Cross

The Crusaders dropped both of their matches last week, losing 3-0 to Harvard and 1-0 to visiting American. Holy Cross has a match with Boston College on Tuesday before returning home to face Army on Saturday in Patriot League action.

Lafayette

B.J. Glenn scored two goals in Lafayette's 4-1 win over Columbia, and the Leopards defeated Bucknell 2-1 on Sunday. The Leopards will next face the Mids in Annapolis on Saturday.

Lehigh

Lehigh defeated Penn State, 2-1 in non-League action on Tuesday before handing Army a tough 1-0 loss in West Point. The Mountain Hawks are 2-1-2 in Patriot League play and will host Bucknell on Saturday.

Navy

The Mids notched their first Patriot League points in a 1-1 tie with Colgate on Saturday. Navy will look for its first Patriot League win of the season in a match against Lafayette on Saturday.
