Patriot League Men's Soccer Release 10.6.08

Center Valley, Pa.- Another weekend of Patriot League action is in the books, marking the end of another exciting weekend of League play. Colgate traveled to West Point, where the Raiders defeated Army 2-0. Navy hosted Lehigh on Saturday afternoon and lost 3-0 to the Mountain Hawks. Holy Cross pulled out a gutsy overtime win against Bucknell, bringing their Patriot League record to 2-0-0 after beating the Bison 2-1. In the final game of the weekend, American and Lafayette played to a 1-1 draw in Easton. Three Patriot League teams are ranked in the October 7 NSCAA Regional Polls. Student-athletes from Holy Cross, American, Lehigh and Lafayette all won Patriot League BRINE Player of the Week awards.

BRINE Offensive Player of the Week

Kyle Miller, Holy Cross So., F, Woodbury, N.J.

Miller scored the game-winning goal in the 107th minute as Holy Cross outlasted Bucknell 2-1 in Patriot League play on Saturday. Starting in all 10 games this season, Miller is currently tied for the team lead in points with three goals for six points. Holy Cross now has two Patriot League wins this season.

BRINE Defensive Player of the Week

Karsten Smith, American Jr., D, Huntington Station, N.Y.

Smith scored his third goal of the season, the game-tying goal, from center back in a 1-1 tie with Lafayette. The junior stepped out of the back line and fired a 30-yard strike to the upper 90 to score the equalizer. He led a defense that held Lafayette to one goal in the game.

BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week

Jonathan Nydell, Lehigh So., Islamorada, Fla.

Nydell played all 90 minutes, earning his third shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over Navy. Nydell stopped all five shots he faced, earning himself a 1.000 save percentage.

BRINE Rookie of the Week

Wayne Maminski, Lafayette Fr., F, Philadelphia, Pa.

Maminski earned his second start of the season against American, scoring Lafayette's lone goal on one shot in a 1-1 tie. Maminski has three goals this season, tied for the team lead and the most among freshmen on the team.

Patriot League Preview

All eight Patriot League teams will be in action next Saturday, facing off in a third weekend of Patriot League matches. American welcomes Navy for a Saturday afternoon affair, while Army travels to Bucknell for a 7 p.m. start. Lafayette travels to Colgate as well for a Saturday night game. The marquee matchup of the weekend happens Saturday night in Bethlehem, as the Patriot League-leading 2-0-0 Holy Cross Crusaders take on the 1-0-1 Lehigh Mountain Hawks.

Three Patriot League Teams In NSCAA Regional Poll

Three Patriot League teams are ranked in the October 7 NSCAA Regional Poll. Holy Cross is ranked third in the Middle Atlantic Region after defeating Bucknell this weekend. The Crusaders are joined by Colgate in the sixth position and Lehigh in the ninth position.

2008 Patriot League Tournament

The 2008 Patriot League Tournament will take place Friday and Sunday, November 14 and 16 at the site of the highest seed. The top four teams as determined by the regular-season standings will participate in the Patriot League tourney.

Team Notebooks

American

The Eagles played Lafayette to a 1-1 tie in Patriot League play Saturday night. American hopes to improve on its 3-5-2 record as it hosts Navy on Saturday afternoon.

Army

Army was shut out 2-0 on Saturday by Colgate in West Point. The Black Knights will look for their second win of the season as they travel to Lewisburg for a Saturday evening Patriot League match against Bucknell.

Bucknell

Bucknell lost a heartbreaker in overtime against Holy Cross, 2-1. After earning a 1-1 tie with La Salle, the Bison will look for a win as they take on Army on Saturday.

Colgate

The Raiders defeated Army 2-0 on Saturday in Patriot League action. Colgate will travel to Hartwick to play their postponed game, but will return home to face Lafayette on Saturday night.

Holy Cross

The Crusaders have won two Patriot League games this season, after handing Bucknell a 2-1 overtime defeat. Holy Cross will travel to Bethlehem to take on Lehigh Saturday night in Patriot League action.

Lafayette

The Leopards have two Patriot League ties this season after playing American to a 1-1 draw last Saturday night. The Leopards will look to improve on their 3-4-3 record when they play Colgate Saturday night.

Lehigh

Lehigh was playing on all cylinders Saturday night, scoring three goals against Navy without allowing the Mids to get on the scoreboard. The Mountain Hawks host Patriot League rival Holy Cross on Saturday night.

Navy

The Mids are currently on a 10-game Patriot League losing streak, after getting blanked 3-0 by Lehigh. Navy will look to snap this losing streak as it travels to American for a Saturday night game.
