Patriot League Men's Soccer Release 9.15.08
September 15, 2008 Center Valley, Pa.- All three of Navy's wins this season have come in overtime or double overtime, by players scoring their first career goals. Two of Navy's three game-winning goals in overtime have been scored by freshmen, and seven different players have scored Navy's eight goals on the year. The Bucknell Bison have won tournament titles in back-to-back weekends, winning the Penn State Classic two weekends ago and the Days Inn Classic last weekend. BRINE Offensive Player of the Week B.J. Glenn, Lafayette So., F, Philadelphia, Pa. Glenn had a hat trick in Lafayette's 4-1 win, scoring three goals including the game-winner. Glenn also assisted on the goal scored in the loss to Duquesne. His three-goal performance was the second multi-goal game of his career. Glenn was also named to the Duquesne All-Tournament Team. BRINE Defensive Player of the Week Jerry Dickinson, Holy Cross Sr., D, Pittsburgh, Pa. Dickinson scored two goals in the second half, lifting Holy Cross to a 3-2 victory against Northeastern. Down 2-1 with just under 15 minutes left, Dickinson scored back-to-back unassisted goals for the victory. He also led the Crusaders defensively as they shut out Sacred Heart, 1-0. BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week Nolan Grebb, Navy Sr., Woodbury, N.J. Grebb recorded his third career shutout (and second this year) with a four-save performance in a double-overtime victory over St. Joseph's in Navy's only match of the weekend. Grebb made two saves, including a spectacular diving save late in the second half, to preserve the shutout. BRINE Rookie of the Week Sam Miller, Navy Fr., M/D, Tulsa, Okla. Miller's first career goal came with just 28 seconds left in the second overtime to defeat St. Joseph's 1-0. Miller also helped the Mids to a shutout, as he played fantastic defense in the midfield. Patriot League Notebook Lehigh Receives Votes in National Poll Lehigh received votes in the NSCAA/adidas National Rankings released September 9. The Mountain Hawks, who were 3-0-1 at the time, received three votes. In the Middle-Atlantic Region, five Patriot League institutions are ranked in the top-ten, up one team from last week. Lehigh and Colgate claimed the third and fourth spots, while Bucknell and Holy Cross are ranked sixth and eighth, respectively. American rounds out the regional poll with the tenth spot. The Mids are in the midst of a three-game winning streak, the longest since the 2005 season. Back-To-Back Champs The Bucknell Bison have won tournament titles in back-to-back weekends, winning the Penn State Classic two weekends ago and the Days Inn Classic last weekend. Led by the hot foot of Chris Hennings, the Bison defeated Cornell for the first time in their previous eight matches in the 3-0 win. Hennings scored two goals in that match, his sixth and seventh of the season, after scoring only one career goal before this season. Hennings, Patrick Selwood, Mark Schmiegel and Matt Hittson were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Selwood was also the tournament MVP. 2008 Patriot League Tournament The 2008 Patriot League Tournament will take place Friday and Sunday, November 14 and 16 at the site of the highest seed. The top four teams as determined by the regular-season standings will participate in the Patriot League tourney. Team Notebooks American The Eagles split their games at the Princeton Invitational this weekend, beating Princeton 2-1 and losing to Penn 1-0. American returns home to face James Madison on Wednesday afternoon and George Washington on Saturday. Army Army dropped its fourth game in a row, losing to Manhattan Wednesday night at West Point. The Black Knights look to win their first game of the season when they face St. Francis (N.Y.) Monday night. Bucknell The Bison are now 3-1-2 on the season after winning the Days Inn Classic this weekend. Bucknell plays its next two games on the road this weekend, at Binghamton and Niagara. Colgate Steven Miller scored the game-winning goal for Colgate in a 2-0 victory over Yale this weekend. The Raiders will face Boston University in Boston on Saturday. Holy Cross Junior Thomas Booth made three saves for Holy Cross, earning his second shutout of the season against Sacred Heart Tuesday night in a 1-0 win. The Crusaders travel to Florida this weekend for games against Florida Gulf Coast and Florida International. Lafayette Freshman Wayne Maminski scored his first collegiate goal in the Leopards' 4-1 win over Richmond on Friday. Lafayette's next game is Thursday evening against Rider in Easton. Lehigh The Mountain Hawks dropped both of their games this weekend at the adidas Gamecock Classic in Columbia, S.C. Lehigh looks to rebound on Saturday against Fairleigh Dickinson. Navy The Mids made a stellar defensive effort against St. Joseph's in a 1-0 victory that limited the Hawks to 11 shots, including five after halftime. Navy looks to keep its three-game winning streak alive against George Washington in Annapolis on Tuesday.
