WASHINGTON, D.C. - American University men's soccer senior defender Cristobal Soto has been named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List, as announced by The Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Tuesday.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in college soccer, presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete. Soto is one 34 male finalists.
"On the heels of the Patriot League announcing that our team is the preseason number one pick for 2013, it is tremendous for Cristobal to be named to the National Player of the Year list," said head coach Todd West. "As the defending conference player of the year and preseason pick to repeat the honor, we are relying on him to lead this squad both on and off the field."
Soto is a two-time First Team All-Patriot League selection and a 2012 All-Mid-Atlantic NSCAA honoree. Last season he helped anchor a defense that gave up under a goal a game, ranking 45th in the country with a 0.92 goals against average.
"Cristo is the backbone of our back four and we are excited to see him continue to develop as a player this year," stated West. "His training with Kansas City and DC United in MLS environments this summer has made him sharper and given him a great deal of confidence which will aid our squad as we prepare for the season opener next Friday versus George Washington."
Near the end of the collegiate regular season, NCAA Division I coaches that are NSCAA members will vote on their tops choices and the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15. College soccer fans will also have the opportunity to participate in the selection process, as they will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalists starting in November at the MAC Hermann Trophy Website.
The winners will be announced Friday, January 10, at the trophy presentational at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
