WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Aaron Dupere recorded 10 saves in goal and the Navy defense continued its stellar play, drawing with league-leader American, 0-0, on Saturday afternoon. The tie drops Navy's record to 6-2-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the Patriot League. American is 6-6-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Patriot League.
The tie was Navy's third in a row during the season.
The Midshipmen had plenty of opportunities during the contest, accounting for 15 shots, including six on goal. Navy's best chance may have come in the 78th minute when Michael Rakoczy (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a shot on goal that appeared destined for the net, but was cleared away by a defender after the ball had gotten past AU keeper Matt Makowski.
The Mids outshot American, 7-5, in the first half, but the Eagles turned the tide in the second half and overtime sessions, outshooting the Mids, 16-8, after halftime, including 8-3 in the overtime sessions.
However, the Navy defense and Dupere, a freshman from Royal Palm Beach, Fla., stood tall, recording its second straight shutout and sixth of the season. Dupere's 10 saves are easily a career high and increases his save percentage to .872 with 41 saves and six goals allowed, while lowering his GAA to 0.53.
Navy had three corner kicks to American's six, while the Eagles had 18 fouls to Navy's 13.
The Mids will be in action next on Tuesday night at Longwood in Farmville, Va., for a 7:00 pm start.
