Here is a sample of the stories found in newspapers and on websites throughout the country as the Patriot League champion Navy Midshipmen (15-2) prepare for Monday's NCAA Division Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship Game.
The second-ranked Midshipmen, who defeated sixth-ranked Princeton in Saturday's semifinal game 8-7 before a record-breaking crowd of 46,923, will face fourth-seeded Syracuse on ESPN (2:30 p.m.). It was the third-straight Ivy League foe the Mids defeated in the NCAA Tournament, along with Penn and Cornell, to advance to the title match.
Navy will be the second Patriot League team to play in an NCAA Championship game this season. Colgate's fourth-ranked football team advanced to the title game with wins over Massachusetts, Western Illinois and Florida Atlantic before losing in the Division I-AA Championship game against second-ranked Delaware.
Ironically, in both the I-AA football playoffs and the men's lacrosse tournament, the teams competing in the title game are the second and fourth-seeded teams.
It's Navy's first NCAA championship game appearance since 1975, when the Mids dropped a 20-13 championship game decision to Maryland at Johns Hopkins.
Syracuse is playing in the national championship game for the fifth time in the last six years. The Orange have an 8-5 record in championship games, including victories over Princeton in 2000 and 2002.
