LOYOLA CAST AS THE FAVORITE
GREYHOUNDS, LEHIGH IN TOP 15
With 123 points and 13 first-place votes, Loyola will begin its inaugural season as the Patriot League Men's Lacrosse favorite as chosen by the League's head coaches and sports information directors. Bucknell (108 points) was narrowly tabbed as runner by one point over two-time defending champion Lehigh (107).
Loyola and Lehigh are both ranked in the top 15 men's lacrosse teams in the country in the USILA Division I Coaches Poll and the Warrior Division I Media Poll. The Mountain Hawks, a 10-7 winner over Boston University last Saturday, are ranked 14th in both polls while Loyola comes in at 7th in the coaches poll and 8th in the media rankings. Bucknell and Army also received votes in the latest polls released earlier this week.
LEOPARDS EARN FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
Lafayette's balance proved to be the difference as the Leopards picked up their first win of the season with an 8-7 victory over Colgate at Rappolt Field on Saturday. Eight different Lafayette players found the net with John Floyd's goal with 5:34 remaining proving to be the difference. The win by the Leopards overshadowed a strong performance by Colgate freshman Ryan Walsh who netted five of the Raiders seven goals. Walsh cut the Lafayette lead to one with less than three minutes remaining, but Leopards keeper Jake Hyatt stopped Walsh's bid for a sixth goal with 23 seconds left.
FLETCHER SELECTED FOR U.S. NATIONAL TEAM.....
Loyola University senior defender Joe Fletcher, the Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, was the only college player selected for the 30-man United States National Team roster which will compete in the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships this July in Denver. Patriot League alums Garrett Thul ('13 Army) and Chris Eck ('08 Colgate) were also chosen.
AND NAMED ONE OF FOUR CANDIDATES FROM PATRIOT LEAGUE FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD
Four Patriot League student-athletes were among the 20 named to the Men's Lacrosse Senior CLASS Award candidate list on Thursday, including two from Loyola as Joe Fletcher and Justin Ward both earned a spot. Lehigh's Ty Souders and Bucknell's Todd Heritage joined them to complete the League's candidate list. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Men's Lacrosse Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Baltimore May 24-26.
