EASTON, Pa. -
Lafayette fell in its Patriot League opener on Saturday, falling 12-7 to Navy at Rappolt Field. The Leopards gave up a pair of goals before halftime and were unable to climb out of a 6-3 deficit at the break.
Offensively, Lafayette (2-3, 0-1) was led by a trio of two-goal performances as seniors Will Heffernan, Doug Prusoff and Colin Serling each beat Navy (2-3, 1-1) goalie RJ Wickham twice.
Seven minutes into the game, Lafayette held a 2-1 lead after Heffernan and Serling scored within a minute of each other to offset Pat Durkan’s opening goal for Navy. Gabe Voumard evened the score at 6:29 as the two squads ended the first quarter deadlocked.
Voumard put the Mids ahead to start the second quarter when he took a pass from Tucker Hull and fired a shot past Lafayette goalkeeper Andrijko Andrusko. Seventy seconds later, Prusoff tied the game with an unassisted overhand shot just under the crossbar. Navy took control of the remainder of the second, scoring three goals including two in the final minute.
Eight seconds into the second half, Pat Kiernan extended the Mids’ lead to 7-3. Heffernan then scored with 10:45 showing on the clock to draw Lafayette within two. Brian Bock then took a feed from Heffernan with the Leopards’ on the man-advantage and rifled a shot into the back of the cage to make it 7-5.
Navy pulled away in the fourth quarter by scoring the first four goals of the final 15 minutes. Hull scored two of his three goals and finished the game with five assists.
Each team took 30 shots in the game and Navy scooped up 30 ground balls, compared to 24 for Lafayette. The Maroon and White controlled 14 of the game’s 23 draw controls.
Andrusko made two saves in the first half for Lafayette and Jake Hyatt turned away four Navy shots in the second half. Wickman stopped 11 in goal for Navy.
