Europe retained the Palmer Cup trophy by defeating the United States, 14.5-9.5, in the Palmer Cup Saturday, a Ryder Cup-style competition at Ballybunion Golf Club in County Kerry, Ireland. The victory was the largest in the series for the Europeans and moves the all-time record of the event to 4-3-1. The United States won three matches in the morning foursomes to move to within four points, 10-6, after trailing 9-3 after the first day of competition. J.J. Jakovac and Ryan Moore claimed the first match for the Americans, downing the Spanish duo of Gonzalo Casta??o and Alejandro Ca??izares, 2-up. Europe would rebound to win the second match 1-up when Francesco Molinari and Martin Rominger defeated Matt Every and Chris Nallen. Team USA would be victories in the final-two matches of the morning when Jason Hartwick and Chris Stroud won 2 and 1 over Rhys Davies and Gareth Maybin. Former Naval Academy standout Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) and Jack Ferguson trailed the first-11 holes before squaring their match on the 12th. Hurley and Ferguson trailed once again after the 15th, but the duo knotted the score on the 16th and held even with the Europeans in the 17th. Hurley and Ferguson gained the point for Team USA by winning the match on the 18th hole in a come-from-behind victory over Lars Brovold and Alex Nor??n. Europe claimed the first-three singles matches of the afternoon session to retain possession of the cup when Brovold downed Hurley, 8 and 6, Davies defeated Every, 3 and 2, and Casta??o won 4 and 3 over Moore. Nallen would claim the next point for the United States, 3 and 1 against Martin Rominger. Ca??izares won the final match for the Europeans when he defeated Jakovac 2-up in a match he led only the final-two holes. The United States claimed the next two matches, both 2 and 1 victories by Stroud and Hartwick. Ferguson and Molinari halved the final match of the competition. Hurley, the 2004 Patriot League champion and 2004 Patriot League Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, finish the two day tournament with two wins in four matches during the event. In Friday afternoon's singles action, Hurley defeated Europe's Francesco Molinari, 4 and 3. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition named in honor of legendary golfer Arnold Palmer is an international golf competition that annually pits the top eight collegiate golfers from the United States against their counterparts from Europe. Administered by the GCAA (Golf Coaches Association of America), the Palmer Cup alternates between sites in the United States and Europe. The U.S. representatives are nominated by GCAA coaches and selected by the association's All-America committee. Former Palmer Cup members include Jonathan Byrd (2002 Buick Challenge winner), Ben Curtis (2003 British Open champion), Matt Kuchar (2002 Honda Classic winner) and Hank Kuehne (topped the PGA Tour in driving distance in 2003).
