Holy Cross' Steve Zychowski

WASHINGTON, N.J. - Holy Cross senior golfer Steve Zychowski(Mendham, N.J.) has qualified to play in the 2012 United States Amateur Championship, which will take place at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., from Aug. 13-19. This is the second time in the last three years that Zychowski has qualified as he also made it to the 2010 tournament when he was the first Holy Cross golfer to compete in the U.S. Amateur in over 35 years.
Zychowski earned his spot in the field by placing third at a qualifying tournament held at the Hawk Pointe Golf Club in Washington, N.J., on July 23. He finished with a total of 140 strokes over 36 holes to finish four under par. He birdied three of the last five holes to earn one of the qualifying spots. St. John's senior Pat Wilson finished first with a 137 and former Ohio State golfer Daniel Charen placed second with a 139.
Zychowski, who will be a 2012-2013 team captain, led the team as a junior with 75.4 strokes average and led the team in seven events. He was named the Patriot League Golfer of the Month in October and won the 2011 NEIGA Championship. He also earned first team All-Patriot League accolades as a sophomore and the led the team with a 74.5 average for the season.
The Crusaders will start the 2012 fall season when they travel to Wethersfield, Conn., to compete in the Central Connecticut Invitational on Sept. 8-9, at the Wethersfield Country Club.
