Former Naval Academy standout Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) opened match play of the 91st Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Amateur Championship Thursday as the No. 1 seed and captured a pair of wins en route to quarterfinals action set for Friday.
Hurley is one of just four remaining top-10 seeds left in the tournament.
Hurley dispatched of 32nd-seeded K.P. Harris, 3 and 2, in the first round of match play Thursday morning, before beating No. 17 Will Oldham in the afternoon, 5 and 4.
Hurley's quarterfinal opponent, Miller Baber, defeated 25th-seeded Charles E. Green, III, 3 and 2, in the first round and beat No. 9 Jeffrey Klatt, 4 and 3, in the second round.
Following Friday's quarterfinals and semifinals, the 36-hole match play final is slated for Saturday.
