Will Delano can appreciate what a gift from the gods means on the golf course.

Even though he was the steadiest player at last year's Seacoast Amateur Golf Championship, it wasn't until his drive on the final hole at Abenaqui Country Club stayed barely out of the hazard after clipping some tree leaves that he could hit the approach shot that closed out his victory.

Delano, a 20-year-old summer resident of Kittery Point, Maine, who just completed his sophomore year at Colgate University, will tee off at Portsmouth Country Club in Greenland on Friday morning, attempting to successfully defend his title in the 31st Seacoast Am.

Part of him knows he's lucky to be in the field at all.
