WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army golf team continues to be recognized for its stellar season on and off the course as Scott Manley was selected by the Golf Coaches Association to the Ping New England All-America team and Pete Mangold was named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar.
Manley earned Patriot League "Player of the Year" honors following his first place finish at the conference championships. The freshman carded a 209, along with teammate Kevin Lee and Navy's Billy Hurley, setting a Patriot League Championship record. In addition, Manley was one of five Army players to be selected to the All-Patriot League team. Manley finished the season as the top Black Knight golfer with a stroke average of 76.2. The Dove Canyon, Calif. (Santa Margarita H.S.), native led Army in four of nine tournaments this spring. At the NCAA Regionals in Little Rock, Ark., Manley turned in the best showing for the Black Knights, tying for 108th place in the individual standings.
Recently named the Patriot League's Golf "Scholar-Athlete of the Year," Mangold has had as much success on the course as he has had in the classroom. The native of Allison Park, Pa. (Hampton H.S.), shot a season-low 70 in the final round of the Patriot League Championships en route to a sixth place finish in the individual standings. With his Top 10 finish, Mangold capped off his senior year with a second all-league certificate.
An operations research major with a 3.57 cumulative grade point average (GPA), Mangold is an eight-time member of the Dean's List and a three-time member of the Patriot League Golf Academic Honor Roll. He was an Academy Gold Star recipient, presented to cadets for posting a 3.60 GPA in consecutive semesters, and is a two-time winner of the Superintendent's Wreath. Mangold was also inducted into the Math Honor Society in 2000.
The recent Academy graduate also was named to the All-Patriot League team in 2000 after placing sixth individually at the conference tournament.
Joining Manley on the New England team were Michael Carbone, Thomas Giles, David Spitz, James Clarke, Chris Eckerle, Jason Lockwood and Kenneth Fahey of the University of Rhode Island, Neel Williams and Alex Fulton of Yale University, University of Hartford's Dean Carrigan and Miroslav Holub, Sean Vigue (University of Connecticut), Adam Fuchs (Binghamton University) and Michael Welch (Central Connecticut State University).
Mangold was among 86 recipients named Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar. To be eligible for the award, players must play in at least 70 percent of their team's competitive rounds, maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA and earn a scoring average under 76.0.
Army won its seventh Patriot League championship and first since 1995 last month, receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. The team concluded its turnaround season with a 26th-place showing at the 2002 NCAA Central Regional at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Little Rock, Ark. Army returned to the national spotlight following a seven-year absence.
