Navy senior Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.), the 2003 Patriot League Championship medalist, became the first Midshipman in the 13-year history of the League to win the PL Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in a vote of the League's sports information directors.

He was one of 24 student-athletes named to the 2003 Patriot League Golf Academic Honor Roll.

Crum, a political science major with a 3.26 cumulative grade point average (GPA), won the 2003 PL individual title with a four-under-par 212, leading Navy to the team championship. He is the fourth Navy player in the last six years to win medalist honors at the PL Tournament and led the Mids to their fourth team title in the last five years. It was Crum's second-straight year on the All-League team after placing eighth in the 2002 Championship.

Crum finished the season with a 73.87 stroke average, which ranked second on the team, but captured a team-best three individual tournament titles during the 2003 campaign. In addition to the PL crown, Crum won the Navy Spring Tournament and the Rehoboth Beach Fall Invitational, which was his first collegiate championship.

He followed his PL title performance with a four-over-par effort to place 27th individually at the NCAA West Regional Tournament, which was Navy's top NCAA performance since 1963 when Tom Flory placed 19th. He posted eight Top 10 finishes and 10 Top 20 finishes this season.

In addition to his excellence in the classroom, Crum was named a 2002 College Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar and has been nominated for the award again this year.

Navy junior Billy Hurley was the lone golfer to post a perfect 4.00 grade-point average (GPA) during the spring semester.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the six winter or nine spring championship sports.

A total of 771 student-athletes were named to the League's Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll, including 39 with 4.00 GPAs. The Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll includes the sports of men's and women's basketball, men's and women's track & field, men's and women's swimming & diving, baseball, golf, men's and women's lacrosse, softball and men's and women's tennis.

Bucknell led the way with 186 student-athletes on the League's Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. The Bison landed a League-best five student-athletes on the Golf Academic Honor Roll, while Lafayette lays claim to four recipients.
