Army senior Pete Mangold (Allison Park, Pa.) became the first Black Knight in the 12-year history of the Patriot League to win the PL Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in a vote of the League's sports information directors.
Mangold, an operations research major with a 3.57 cumulative grade point average (GPA), finished among the top 10 at the Patriot League championship for the third time to earn All-League honors. He appeared in all seven spring tournaments for the Black Knights, posting a 76.2 stroke average.
Mangold's lowest round of the season (70) contributed to his sixth-place finish at the PL championship, helping the Black Knights win the League title for the first time since 1995. It was Army's seventh team championship in the 12-year history of the League.
An eight-time member of the Dean's List and a three-time member of the PL Golf Academic Honor Roll, Mangold is an Academy Gold Star recipient after posting a 3.60 GPA in consecutive semesters. He is also a two-time winner of the Superintendent's Wreath and was inducted into the Math Honor Society in 2000.
