Navy senior Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) responded to a rough second round of 6-over par on Friday by recording the field's second-lowest round of the day Saturday with a 2-under par to finish 4-over (214) at the NCAA East Regional at the Course at Yale.
Army finished the three-day tournament tied with Binghamton for 23rd place in the 27-team event, each scoring 924. Clemson won the East Regional team title with a three-day score of 856. The top 10 teams advanced from the regional to the national championship tournament. North Carolina and N.C. State tied for 10th place with 882, 42 shots ahead of the Black Knights.
Scott Manley was Army's top scorer, finishing the 54-hole tournament with a score of 222, which tied for 54th place. Wake Forest's Bill Haas, the 2004 Ben Hogan Award winner, won the individual title with a 3-under par (207), while Clemson won the team title with a three-day score of 856.
The final-day surge left Hurley just shy of qualifying for the 2004 NCAA Championship to be held June 1-4 at Cascades Golf Course, The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. Hurley needed to finish among the top two individuals in the East Regional whose teams didn't not qualify as one of the top 10 teams in the region.
The Navy senior finished fifth among those individuals whose teams did not advance. Haas' 3-under was the top score by golfer whose team failed to qualify, while Aron Price of Georgia Southern claimed the second berth with a three-day total score of 2-over par (212). Duke's Ryan Blaum and Georgetown's James Farrah each recorded total scores of 3-over par (213).
