ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Anchored by senior members Tyler Kuhn (Prospect, Ky.), Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.) and Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.), the Navy golf team returns to postseason action for the first time since 2008 when the Midshipmen travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take part in the 2012 NCAA Men's Golf Ann Arbor Regional beginning on Thursday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at the par-71 U-M Golf Course where the lowest scoring five teams and the low individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championship to be held May 29-June 3 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
One of six regional sites Michigan will play host to the 13-team regional which includes nationally-ranked programs USC (7), Oregon (12), Kent State (18) and Virginia (22), along with Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kennesaw State, TCU, Purdue, NC State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Navy. Additionally, 10 individuals have been selected to play in the championship - Charlie Bill, Akron; William Park, Army; Tyler Merkel, Ball State; Peter Williamson, Dartmouth; Greg Matthias, Delaware; Chad Ebert, Green Bay; Matt Thompson, Michigan; Dan Ellis, Michigan State; Erik Van Rooyen, Minnesota and Sebastian MaClean, Xavier - all vying for a single spot to advance.
The Midshipmen will be making their 11th NCAA Championship appearance, but first since 2008. Under the direction of 22nd-year head coach Pat Owen, Navy earned tournament bids in 1998, '00, '01, '03, `08 and now in 2012. The Mids' best finish under Owen was in 1998 when Navy placed 19th among the 23-team field at the Melrose Golf Course in Hilton Head, S.C.
Reilly, a three-time All-Patriot League qualifier, will lead the charge for the Mids after placing sixth at the Patriot League Championship three weeks ago. He is pacing the Midshipmen with his 75.1 stroke average, producing five top-10 finishes and four top-five marks.
Rookie August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) also grabbed Second-Team All-Patriot League kudos at the conference championship this season after turning in a team-low tying 8-over par 221 to place sixth. Jonas boasts a 76.1 stroke average which is third best and is one of two players to win individual titles this season. Ironically, Jonas' title win at the Navy Fall Invitational marked his first collegiate event.
Posting a 76.3 stroke average is second-year standout Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) who finished just a stroke out of 10th position which would have given him All-Patriot League status this spring. Selby has one top-five finish this season.
Shield, the Mids' team captain, returns to his home state of Michigan to take part in his final collegiate event. Hailing from Grosse Pointe Park, less than an hour's drive from Ann Arbor, Shield totes a 76.6 stroke average and has the distinction of being the second Navy golfer to claim medalist honors this season with a 3-under par 139 at the Rehoboth Beach Invitational.
Rounding out the lineup for the Mids is Kuhn, who put together a strong performance at the Patriot League Championship, providing Navy with its low round over the final 18 holes. Kuhn, who has played in eight of the 11 events this season, owns a 77.0 stroke average.
