2002 NCAA Men's Golf Selections
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army golf team's fate was determined Monday evening when Mike Carter, chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee, announced via teleconference that the Black Knights will be seeded 26th at the NCAA Central Regional May 16-18. Pleasant Valley Golf Course will host the Central Regional in Little Rock, Ark.
The Black Knights won the 2002 Patriot League Championship by an impressive 29 strokes to receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Headlining the Army contingent is 2002 Patriot League Champion Scott Manley. The Black Knights will also feature All-Patriot League selections Kevin Lee, Peter Mangold, Ryan Hazelton and David Crawford.
Army returns to the NCAA Regional after a seven-year absence. The Black Knights participated in the NCAA East Regional on four occasions (1991, 1992, 1993 and 1995) finishing as high as 16th in 1992.
Joining Army in Little Rock, Ark. will be eight national-ranked teams and four teams receiving votes according to the latest Golf Coaches Association of America Coaches Poll. Texas Christian, ranked eighth nationally, is the top seed. North Carolina State is seeded second followed by Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Toledo, Purdue, Lamar, Baylor and Alabama, respectively.
Headlining the East Regional is Georgia Tech and Southern California is the top seed in the West.
The NCAA Regional is a 54-hole, three-day event. Each regional consists of 27 teams and six individuals not on those teams. The low ten teams and the low two individuals, not on those teams, will advance to the championship, May 29-June 1. Ohio State will host the 2002 NCAA Championship at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. The NCAA Championship will be determined after 72 holes of play. The NCAA will award the top four teams finishes and the top 15 individuals.
