WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman Scott Manley was named Patriot League "Player of the Year" by the league office Monday and five Army golfers were selected to the All-Patriot League Team following their stellar performances at the 2002 conference championship. Army's head coach, Jimmy Ray Clevenger, was also named "Coach of the Year."
Manley won medallist honors on the third playoff hole of the league tournament on April 20. He finished in a three-way tie after three rounds with teammate Kevin Lee and Navy's Billy Hurley with a Patriot League Tournament record 209. Playing a championship format, all individual ties for first place are decided with a playoff following the final round of play. Manley shot a 69 in the first two rounds and concluded his performance with a 71 in the final round. Manley was also named to the 10-member All-Patriot League Team.
Joining Manley from Army on the All-Patriot League Team were Lee, Pete Mangold, Ryan Hazelton and David Crawford.
Also honored from Army, Clevenger was named Patriot League "Coach of the Year" by his peers. Clevenger led the Black Knights to their seventh championship in the league's 12-year history. The honor was the seventh for Clevenger.
"Scott (Manley) has been the glue the team was missing last year," said Clevenger. "We were good last year but we were not an NCAA-caliber team.
"Scott is a very consistent player. He is very mature and he will have a great career here at Army. Scott has done well not only athletically but also in the classroom. He is a true scholar-athlete."
Tying with Manley for first place, Lee tied a Patriot League record shooting a 65 in the first round. This mark was the best at the two-day championship. Lee shot a 73 in the second round and a 71 in the final 18-holes to earn his first league honor.
Mangold earned his second All-Patriot League Team selection with a sixth place finish. Mangold shot a 54-hole six-over-par 216 (71-75-70). In 2000, Mangold was also named to the all-league team after a sixth place finish.
Hazelton capped off his senior year with his third all-conference nod. Hazelton took seventh place, his highest finish at the league championship, with a three-round 219 (66-77-76). In his four years at the Academy, Hazelton has finished in the top 15 each year at the league tournament. He also was selected to the all-league team in 2001 with an eighth place finish and in 2000 when he tied for ninth.
Rounding out the Army all-league contingent, David Crawford finished tied for ninth place. He shot a three-round 221 (74-75-72). Last year Crawford just missed out on the honor with a 12th place finish.
"It think five selections to the All-Patriot League Team is an example of how good our team is this year," said Clevenger.
"Going in, I thought we were overlooked. We are in a different region than most of the other teams and they did not get to see how we compared against conference opponents."
Joining the Army five on the All-Patriot League team were Navy's Brian Crum and Billy Hurley, American's Wesley Cupp, Lehigh's Bowen Osborn, and Jesse Smith from Colgate.
The Black Knights will compete at the 2002 NCAA Regional Championship on May 16-18. Army received the Patriot League's automatic bid with its win at the 2002 Patriot League Championship. The Black Knights await the NCAA selection committee's decision as to which regional location they will be assigned. The NCAA field will be announced on May 6 at 6 p.m.
