Navy came from one stroke down after the first round, to post a 6-stroke victory over Lehigh and claim the 2002 Scotty Duncan Memorial title. The Mids posted the best round on the final day of competition with a 5-over par 289 for a final score of 587.
Lehigh finished with a 593, followed by Washington & Lee (603) in third, Villanova (606) in fourth and George Washington (610) beat out Towson by a stroke for fifth place. The Navy Gold squad, meanwhile, placed eighth with a 630.
Three Mids were among the top 10 finishers, including junior Nick Rogers (Lothian, Md.) who won the tournament with a 2-over par 144. Rogers was in a seven-way tie for third place after the first round with a 73, but his even-par 71 Sunday gave him a 1-stroke advantage in the final standings. It was Rogers' first collegiate tournament victory.
Meanwhile, sophomore Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) finished tied for fourth with Lehigh's Patrick McCahill with a 146. Team captain Drew Craig (Marion, Ohio) concluded his career with a sixth-place 147, just a stroke behind Hurley. Fellow senior Marty Keogh (Newark, Del.) was just two shots out of the top 10, placing tied for 12th with a 151, while junior Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.) came in 20th with a 154.
The top finisher for the Navy Gold squad was freshman Rocky Novellino (Bayville, N.J.), who tied Crum in 20th with a 154.
"This was a great way to finish out the season," said head coach
Pat Owen. "I'm really happy for Nick and his win and moreover the
entire team for its performance. We are really excited about our
prospects for next season."
