CENTER VALLEY, PA. - Five members of the Patriot League champion Army golf team were named to the All-Patriot League first and second teams in an announcement by league officials today. Seniors Pete Phipps and Scott Manley both finished in the top five in the individual competition and earned spots on the all-league first team while junior Austin Luher and freshmen Patrick Beverly and Joey Cave were named to the second team for finishing in the top ten.
Manley and Phipps tied for fourth place after registering a score of 214 in the 54-hole competition. Manley enjoyed two rounds of even par followed by a 74 in the third and final round, while Phipps fired a one-under 69 in round two, marking his lowest score of the spring season. Manley netted his third all-league selection (2002, 2004) while Phipps notched his second (2003).
Luher also carded his lowest score of the spring (71) in round one, and finished seventh overall at 219. Beverly, who placed eighth, was one stroke behind Luher at 220 which included a season-best 71 in the opening round. Cave, who was competing in only his third tournament of the spring, came up big in round two with a career-low 70 and finished in a tie for tenth at 222.
The Black Knights won their ninth Patriot League title and third in the last four years and have one tournament remaining on their spring slate before embarking on their second straight journey to the NCAA Regionals. Army will participate in the Rhode Island Tournament in Portsmouth, R.I., this weekend. The Black Knights will travel to one of three sites, Nashville, Tenn., South Bend, Ind., or Stanford, Calif., for the 2005 NCAA Regionals May 19-21.
