Patriot League Golf Championship Team and Individual Results
Hamilton, N.Y. - Picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll, Lafayette is in great position to win its first Patriot League Golf Championship as it holds a nine-shot lead with 18 holes to play after Saturday's first two rounds at Colgate's Seven Oaks Golf Course.
The Leopards grabbed the lead with a strong performance through the first 36 holes, shooting a 598 (+22) and taking the advantage with the low round of the tournament by shooting a 295 in the afternoon.
Lafayette holds the edge over rival Lehigh (+31), with Navy (+33), Bucknell (+34) and Army (+35) very much in striking distance heading into the final round. Host Colgate is at +41, with Holy Cross rounding out the field at +48.
While the schools in the Lehigh Valley hold the top two spots in the field, they also boast the student-athletes that are tied for the individual lead heading into the final 18 holes. Lafayette's Rob Robertson and Lehigh's Steve Suarez each shot an even-par 144 through the first 36 holes. Holy Cross' Steve Zychowski is two shots back, with Army's Matt Philie (+4) and Lafayette's Tyler Ostrovsky (+5) completing the top five.
Colgate's David Ake (+6) is in sixth, with a three-way tie for seventh at +7 between Holy Cross' Mike McCarthy, Lafayette's Josh Edelson and Navy's Peter Reilly. Four of the top nine players are freshman. There is also a three-way tie for 10th place at +8 between Bucknell's Brian Bartow and Ryan Schneiter and Navy's Mike Harrigan. The top 10 finishers in the tournament earn All-Patriot League recognition.
Last year's individual champion, Bucknell senior Andrew Cohen, sits 10 shots off in the lead and in a tie for 16th place after shooting a 154 (+10) on the first 36 holes. Army's Matt Krembel, who took second place at last year's Championship, is also one of the six players coming in at 10-over par.
The 2010 Patriot League Golf Championship resumes on Sunday morning with the final 18 holes at Seven Oaks Golf Course.
