Navy's David Miller Named 2009 Patriot League Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year
April 22, 2009 Center Valley, Pa. - Navy senior David Miller has been selected as the 2009 Patriot League Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote of the League's golf sports information directors, it was announced on Wednesday. Miller holds a 3.58 cumulative grade point average as a Quantitative Economics major at Navy. He has earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in each of his first three seasons, and stands 184th in his class of 1,074 students in academic order of merit and 50th in military order of merit. He has appeared on the Navy Commandant's List all seven semesters, while earning Superintendent's List mention five times. Miller will be commissioned into the United States Marine Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant and has service selected Marine Corps Ground. Miller has served as Navy's team captain in his senior year, and will lead the Mids in their quest to repeat as Patriot League Golf Champion this weekend. Miller has played 22 rounds in the 2008-09 campaign, and leads the Mids with a 76.8 stroke average over nine events. He has recorded Navy's best individual finish in five of those nine events, including a 13th-place finish at last week's Navy Spring Invitational. Miller comes off a year where he earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors by placing fifth in the 2008 Patriot League Golf Championship to help the Mids to the team title. Miller enters this weekend's Patriot League Golf Championship as the highest returning finisher from last season. Miller brings home a third consecutive Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for Navy after Chris Renninger claimed the honor in each of the past two seasons. It is Navy's fifth all-time Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, with all of the awards coming in the past seven seasons. To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor. The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
