Lewisburg, Pa. (April 21, 2007) - The U.S. Military Academy men's golf team owns a two-shot advantage over host Bucknell after the first day of competition at the Patriot League Championship in Lewisburg, Pa.
Army posted a 36-hole score of 586 Saturday, while Bucknell recorded a team score of 588 and Navy stands in third place at 592, a half dozen strokes behind their archrival. The Black Knights have four plays among the top dozen players, while three Bison golfers are also among the top 12.
Bucknell is the reigning Patriot League champion after edging Army by two strokes at last year's championship, which was played at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis, Md. It was the first Patriot League title for the Bison in the sport of golf.
The Bison held a two-shot lead over Army after the first 18 holes Saturday with a score of 291.
Matt Czarnecki of Holy Cross and Navy's Chris Renninger are tied for the lead with a score of one-over-par 141. They lead Army's Pat Beverly by three shots.
Czarnecki tied for 12th place at last year's Championship after earning All-Patriot League honors in 2005 with an eighth-place finish. Meanwhile, Renninger earned fifth place at last year's Patriot League Championship. Both Beverly and Renninger were All-Patriot League honorees in 2006.
Two-time defending champion Charlie Waddell of Bucknell is tied for sixth place at seven-over 147, a half-dozen shots behind the co-leaders. Waddell is the only golfer in Patriot League history to win consecutive individual golf titles.
Matt Hanlon of Army was the individual leader after 18 holes with a score of one-over 71. Four other golfers were deadlocked at 72.
The final round of the Championship begins at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Bucknell Golf Course. The tournament was originally slated to be played at West Point Golf Course. However, due to an excessive amount of rainfall, the Patriot League Championship was relocated to Bucknell earlier this week. This is the fourth time Bucknell has hosted the Patriot League Golf Championship (1994, 2000, 2005, 2007).
