NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Junior captain Scott Manley fired an even-par 70 on the third and final round at the NCAA East Regional as the Army golf team ended up in a tie for 23rd place out of 27 teams competing at the Yale Golf Course. The Black Knights shot a combined 310 in round three to bring their 54-hole total to 924 for the tournament.
Manley saved his best round for last, helping him climb 27 spots into a tie for 54th place overall in the individual competition with a three-round composite of 222. For the second time in three years, Manley was Army's top individual finisher at the NCAA Regional.
Austin Luher posted a score of 78 to finish at +24 for the tournament and in a tie for 111th (234), while Mark Erwin rounded out the regional with a score of 81, good for 128th place. Pete Phipps carded an uncharacteristic 91 this afternoon, dropping him into a tie for 131st place, and D.J. Reeves registered a score 81, bringing his 54-hole total to 243.
Wake Forest's Bill Haas won medallist honors by finishing the three-round tournament with a three-under total of 207. Haas and Georgia Southern's Aaron Price advance as individual qualifiers to the NCAA Championships. Defending champion Clemson captured the team title by six strokes over runner-up Penn State with a combined 856, 16-over-par for the tournament. The Tigers, along with Penn State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Auburn, Georgia State, Rhode Island, Vanderbilt and North Carolina make up the 10-team contingent advancing from the East to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for June 1-4 in Hot Springs, Va.
