NASHVILLE, TENN. - Senior team captain Scott Manley birdied six holes in the second round en route to a one-over 72 at the 2005 NCAA East Regional at The Golf Club of Tennessee Friday afternoon. After 36 holes, Army finds itself in 25th place out of 27 teams with a composite score of 604 (+36). Wake Forest (554, -14) owns a three-stoke lead over second-place Florida (557, -11) for top honors heading into the final round on Saturday.
Army came into today's round tied for 21st place but slipped four spots to 25th; however, the Black Knights remain ahead of Rhode Island (625, +57) and Boston College (633, +65).
Manley overcame an uncharacteristic 82 in the opening round yesterday and climbed 18 spots in the individual competition. After playing even par on the front nine, Manley birdied four of the next seven holes on the back nine and was on his way to carding Army's first sub-par round of the tournament before a quadruple bogey on 18 bumped his score up to 72.
Junior Austin Luher benefited from his second consecutive birdie on the 10th hole and an eagle on the par-four 15th to finish with a two-over 73. That score brings his two-round composite to 144 and places him in a tie for 47th overall.
Freshman Joey Cave registered five birdies in today's round but struggled with his consistency and settled for an 80 in round two. Classmate Patrick Beverly was two-over at the turn but faded late to finish with an 81. Despite sinking a pair of birdie puts on two par-fives, senior Pete Phipps bogeyed 11 holes on the day and rounded out the Army contingent with a score of 82.
The Black Knights wrap up the regional Saturday morning from the tenth tee at 12:45 p.m. CT.
