PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Coming off a stellar performance at the 2002 Patriot League Championship, the Army golf team sits second after the first round of the URI Spring Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Green Valley Golf Club in Portsmouth, R.I.
Battling cold conditions and up to 30 mile an hour winds, Kevin Lee continued his late season surge leading the Black Knights with a seven-over-par 77 and tied for fifth place. Scott Manley and Pete Mangold followed closely behind in ninth place with an 18-hole 78.
Rounding out Army golfer, Ryan Hazelton and David Crawford tied for 23rd after shooting a first day 80.
Rhode Island's Jason Lockwood led all golfers with a one-over-par 72. Temple's Pat O'Neil is in second with a 75. Top regionally ranked Rhode Island is in first place in the team standings with a 312. Army follows closely in second with a 313. Connecticut (317), Dartmouth (318) and Binghamton (319) round out the top five teams. Eighteen teams in all are participating in the invitational.
"Conditions were really bad today," said head coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger. "Our scores were a little high because of that.
"I was a little concerned about how we were going to play today coming off the Patriot League Championship. We played really hard but the weather prevented us from playing well.
"Our goal after the New England Championship was to come here and make an impact on the region. We have another chance tomorrow to beat Rhode Island."
Army will concluded its regular season tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 27 at the URI Spring Invitational in Portsmouth, R.I.
The Black Knights won the Patriot League Championship by an impressive 29 strokes last week and received the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Army then awaits the NCAA selection committee's regional placement decision. The NCAA Regionals will take place on May 16-18.
