Patiot League Golf Results - Day One
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Kevin Lee shot five-under-par to lead the Black Knights to first place after the first round of play at the Patriot League Championship at the West Point Golf Course in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday.
Lee tied the Patriot League's 18-hole record of 65 set by Ryan Hazelton at the Dartmouth Invitational in 1998. Lee's score of 65 on Saturda also betters his best round this season by nine stokes.
Ryan Hazelton sits in second place with a four-under-par 66. The mark is one shot off his personal best. Scott Manley was the third Black Knight to finish the first round under par. He shot an 18-hole total of 69.
Pete Mangold shot a one-over-par 71 and is tied for fifth place in the individual standings. David Crawford shot a 74 to tie for 13th. Anthony Towne rounded out Black Knight golfers in 37th place.
The Black Knights shot a nine-under-par team total of 271 to sit 14 strokes ahead of the closest opponent Navy (285). Rounding out the field, Lehigh and American are tied for third (298), Colgate and Bucknell are tied for fifth (300), Lafayette is seventh (321) and Holy Cross is in eighth (322).
"I am really proud of the way we played today," said head coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger. "We are taking it one round at a time but overall we had a very solid score today.
"Our goal this weekend was to break 290 each round and keep as close to par as we could. The first 18-holes was much better than we thought."
The Patriot League format is a two-day, 54-hole tournament. The best four of six individual scores are counted for the team placement.
The Black Knights will return to action on Sunday at 8 a.m., kicking off the the final day of the Patriot League Championships at the West Point Golf Course. The winner of the league championship will receive an automatic bid to the 2002 NCAA Golf Championships.
