CENTER VALLEY, Pa.
- Two Patriot League seniors have been honored for their success on the field and in the classroom with a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America Division I football team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced on Thursday.
Colgate wide receiver Chris Looney, who was named the Patriot League Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year last month, was a first-team selection while Lehigh running back Zach Barket made the second team.
Looney is the 13th first-team football Academic All-American from the Patriot League, while the two selections mark the first time since 2004 and just the second in the last 20 years where multiple Patriot Leaguers made the list.
Looney helped Colgate to the Patriot League title and a berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship by recording 43 receptions for 776 yards and six touchdowns to play a key role in the team's offense which is in the top five nationally in both scoring and total yardage. Looney earned a second-team All-Patriot League selection as well as a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
An International Relations & History major, Looney carries a cumulative grade-point average of 3.90 in his senior year at Colgate. He has received the Colgate University Dean's Award for Excellence and been placed on the school's Athletics Honor Roll four times apiece. He is a Charles A. Dana Scholar for "superior achievement as well as demonstrated leadership in the college community."
Looney was named an initial nominee for the 2012 All State AFCA Good Works Team prior to the season.
Barket joined Looney on the Academic All-Patriot League Team, with the senior running back maintaining a 3.46 GPA as an Accounting major at Lehigh. Barket ran for 525 yards and five touchdowns in 2012 after earning All-Patriot League honors last season.
