Center Valley, Pa. - Holy Cross senior quarterback Dominic Randolph placed fifth in the voting for the 2009 Walter Payton Award, presented annually by the Sports Network to the Most Outstanding Player in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision.

It is the highest finish for a Patriot League player since Colgate running back Jamaal Branch won the award in 2003. Randolph, who won the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year award in each of the past three seasons, finished 12th in the Payton voting in 2007 and ninth in 2008.

Randolph completed 310-of-485 passes this year for 3,776 yards and 34 touchdowns, and also ran for seven touchdowns. Randolph set a Patriot League single-season record with 4,256 yards of total offense, also running for 480 yards. He tied the Patriot League single-season record for touchdown passes, and set the mark for touchdowns responsible for with 41. Randolph led the nation in total offense, while standing second in points responsible for, third in completions, fourth in passing yards and 15th in pass efficiency.

He concluded a sensational career with Holy Cross' 38-28 loss to Villanova in the first round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship on Saturday. Randolph set FCS records with 1,131 career completions and 1,786 attempts, and moved into third all-time with 13,455 passing yards. He also closes his career with 14,230 career yards of total offense and 117 passing touchdowns, both in the top five in FCS history. In addition to those marks, Randolph tied the record of 41 career 200-yard passing games and finishes with FCS records of 42 consecutive games with a touchdown pass and 41 straight 200-yard passing games.

Holy Cross concluded the 2009 season with an overall record of 9-3, and won the Patriot League title with a 5-1 mark in League games.

The 23rd Payton Award will be presented at the annual Sports Network awards dinner on Thursday, Dec. 17, in Chattanooga, Tenn. In addition, the 23rd Eddie Robinson Award and the 15th Buck Buchanan Award will be handed out to the top coach and top defensive player in FCS at the Chattanooga Marriott, the night before the NCAA Division I Football Championship game.

 

 

Voting, which is based on regular season performance only, was conducted among media members and media relations professionals covering the FCS. The top three players in the voting, Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards, Elon wide receiver Terrell Hudgins and Southern Illinois running back Deji Karim, will be in attendance at the awards ceremony when the winner is revealed.
