Capital One Academic All-District Football Teams

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Patriot League football student-athletes have shown an ability to perform on the field and in the classroom, and on Thursday the effort was rewarded as 11 players from six different schools were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Teams.

The teams, which are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance athletically and in the classroom. Patriot League schools are represented in District 1 (CT, MA, ME, NH, NY, RI, VT) and District 2 (DC, DE, KY, MD, NJ, PA, WV).

Three schools had representatives in District 1, where Fordham seniors Patrick Murray and Brendan Melanophy, Holy Cross senior Tom Mannix and sophomore Sam Jones, and Colgate senior Chris Looney all made the list. Lafayette led the the way in District 2 with three selections as juniors Mark Ross, Greg Kessel and Brad Bormann all represented the Leopards. Lehigh seniors Zach Barket and Ryan Spadola also earned Academic All-District honors along with Georgetown sophomore Nicholas Alfieri.

Looney, Mannix, Ross, Barket and Spadola all made the Academic All-Patriot League Team in 2011. Melanophy, Spadola and Barket are each named to the Capital One Academic All-District squad for the second year in a row.

Each of the student-athletes has excelled in the classroom. In District 1, Colgate's Looney holds a 3.90 cumulative grade-point average as an International Relations and History major while Fordham's Murray (3.62 GPA/Finance) and Melanophy (3.69 GPA/Finance) and Holy Cross' Jones (3.63/Political Science) and Mannix (3.40/Political Science) have equally impressive resumes. Lafayette's Ross (3.58/Economics), Bormann (3.72/Biology) and Kessel (3.38/Economics) all stand out in the classroom, and so do Lehigh's Barket (3.46/Accounting) and Spadola (3.31/Supply Chain Management) and Georgetown's Alfieri (3.37/Undecided)

The 11-man group also consists of some of the top players on the field in the Patriot League. Spadola was the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and has 42 receptions for 678 yards and three touchdowns on the season, while Barket has run for 457 yards and four scores for Lehigh. Ross is enjoying another oustanding season at Lafayette with 56 receptions for 790 yards and seven touchdowns, while Kessel has three total touchdowns and Bormann has solidified his spot as a top offensive lineman for the Leopards. Murray is having an amazing senior year at Fordham as he leads the nation and has already set a Patriot League single-season record with 21 field goals, and also leads FCS with a 46.0 punting average. Looney has 33 receptions for 622 yards and six touchdowns to do his part for the explosive Colgate offense. The remaining players all have impressive numbers at defensive back, with Fordham's Melanophy (31 TT, 1 INT), Georgetown's Alfieri (75 TT, 1 INT) and Holy Cross' Mannix (76 TT, 2 INT) and Jones (29 TT) each among their team's leaders.

All 11 student-athletes now move on to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third teams will be selected later this month.
