Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week
Rob Curley, Lafayette Sr., QB, 6'1, 200, Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross
Curley led Lafayette to a 35-14 win over Bucknell by playing a nearly perfect game on Saturday, completing 30-of-35 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions or sacks. The completions, attempts and yardage marks were all career highs. Curley threw all three of his touchdown passes in the second half as Lafayette scored on its first four possessions to break open a game that was tied at 7-7 at the break. Curley's quarterback rating was 242.9 for the game. The performance came one week after he set a career high with 305 passing yards against Fordham. He has led Lafayette to its best overall start since 1981 with a 7-1 record, and six consecutive victories for the first time since 1992. Lafayette is 3-0 in the Patriot League for the first time since 2005. Curley ranks in the top 20 nationally in passing yards, total offense and completions per game, while leading the Patriot League and placing seventh in the country with a 155.4 pass efficiency rating. He earns his second career Offensive Player of the Week award.
Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week
Jimmy Thomas, Holy Cross So., LB, 6'3, 204, Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding
Thomas recorded 12 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery to help Holy Cross hold Fordham to 27 points despite 627 yards of total offense in a 41-27 Crusader victory on Saturday. The sacks were the first of his collegiate career, and Thomas placed second on the team while setting a career high in tackles. He recovered a fumble in the third quarter to set up a Holy Cross touchdown that made the score 34-13.
Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week
Rob Dornfried, Holy Cross Jr., K, 5'8, 176, Berlin, Conn./Northwest Catholic
Dornfried earns his first Special Teams Player of the Week award after converting all seven times he kicked the ball in a 41-27 Holy Cross win at Fordham on Saturday. He was 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, hitting from 31 and 20 yards, and also connected on all five of his extra point tries. Dornfried set a career high with 11 points and tied a career best with two field goals made.
Patriot League Rookie of the Week

He made field goals of 27 and 30 yards to help Fordham stay within 24-13 at the half. Heinowitz receives his first Rookie of the Week award after earning the Special Teams honor on Oct. 5.

Patriot League Notebook
Four Teams Within a Game of First Place in Patriot League
Holy Cross and Lafayette won their games on Saturday to remain in a tie for first place in the Patriot League, but Colgate and Lehigh are close behind as the season hits the final month. The Crusaders moved to 3-0 in the League behind four touchdown passes from senior Dominic Randolph and won a shootout at Fordham, 41-27, in a game that featured 1,143 yards of total offense. Lafayette matches the Crusaders with a 3-0 League mark, as the Leopards defeated Bucknell, 35-14, on Saturday. Colgate and Lehigh each now have one loss in the League, as the Raiders improved to 3-1 and dropped the Mountain Hawks to 2-1 with a 27-20 win on Saturday.
Lehigh Valley Hosts Key Patriot League Contests
The top four teams in the Patriot League will play games less than 15 miles apart on Saturday in Eastern Pennsylvania. First, No. 13/14 Holy Cross goes to Lehigh in a contest beginning at 12:30 p.m. No. 18/20 Colgate and No. 25/24 Lafayette kick off just a half-hour later from Easton. Each team is within a game of the Patriot League lead, with Holy Cross and Lafayette at 3-0 followed by Colgate at 3-1 and Lehigh 2-1. Bucknell is at Fordham in a Patriot League contest, while Georgetown plays a non-League game at Marist.
Three Patriot League Teams in Top 25
For the first time since 2005, three Patriot League teams have a spot in the national FCS top 25 polls. Holy Cross came in at No. 14 in the FCS Coaches Poll, followed by Colgate at No. 20 and Lafayette making its debut at No. 24. In The Sports Network top 25, the Crusaders are at No. 13, with the Raiders at No. 18 and the Leopards at No. 25. The last time that three Patriot League teams were ranked in a top 25 poll was after the 2005 FCS playoffs, when Lafayette was No. 20, Colgate came in at No. 22 and Lehigh was No. 25 in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches poll. That had also been the last time that two Patriot League teams were ranked in a top 25 until Colgate joined Holy Cross in the national rankings on Sept. 28. The Crusaders have been ranked since the preseason, while the Raiders have not slipped out of the top 25 since entering the polls. Lafayette is in the top 25 for the sixth season in a row. Holy Cross' rankings of No. 13 and No. 14 are the highest for a Patriot League team since Lehigh was at No. 12 heading into its season finale against Lafayette in 2005.
No Long Wait This Time Around
It took nearly five years for a game that pitted Patriot League top 25 teams against each other until No. 17 Colgate played at No. 22 Holy Cross on Oct. 24. It only took two weeks for the matchup to happen again, as the No. 18/20 Raiders will play at No. 25/24 Lafayette on Saturday. Now, Colgate just has to hope playing on the road in the matchup of ranked Patriot League teams goes better than it has in the past two instances. The No. 18 Raiders fell at No. 12 Lehigh, 21-14, on Oct. 30, 2004, and lost at Holy Cross, 42-28, on Oct. 24. If Lafayette wins, another matchup of ranked teams will likely take place next week when the Leopards go to Holy Cross.
Leopards Trying For Best Marks in Nearly 70 Years
By improving to 7-1 with a win over Bucknell on Saturday, Lafayette has its best record through eight games since 1981. The Leopards also won their sixth consecutive game, the longest single-season streak for the program since 1992. A win on Saturday would make both of those waits seem as small as the gap between New York Yankees' World Series titles. When Lafayette last started 8-1 or better or won seven games in a row in a single season, World War II had just begun. It has not been since the 1940 season that the Leopards accomplished both feats, as that team finished with a perfect 9-0 record. The Leopards did win eight games in a row from 1992-93, but have not done it in a single season in nearly 70 years. Since that year, Lafayette has only recorded eight wins or more for an entire season five times: 1981, 1988, 1992, 2004 and 2005. The latter four seasons all saw Lafayette capture a Patriot League Championship. Lafayette's six-game winning streak is tied for the sixth-longest in the country.
More Historical Success For Top Patriot League Teams
Holy Cross and Colgate join Lafayette by putting up their best marks in some time. The Crusaders' 7-1 record is the top mark for the program since completing a perfect 11-0 season in 1991. Holy Cross has knocked off two top 25 teams to get there (No. 25 Harvard on Sept. 19 and No. 17 Colgate on Oct. 24). Holy Cross will try to win eight games in a season for the first time since that 1991 campaign. Colgate's 8-1 mark is its best through nine games since Head Coach Dick Biddle led the 2003 team to 15 straight wins to open the season before falling in the national title game to Delaware. A victory in either of the last two games would give Colgate its second consecutive nine-win season, and the fifth in Biddle's 14-year tenure.
Special Seasons for Patriot League Quarterbacks
Holy Cross quarterback Dominic Randolph might have the most name recognition among Patriot League signal-callers, but he's hardly alone in acknowledgement for his play on the field this season. Colgate's Greg Sullivan, Lafayette's Rob Curley and Fordham's John Skelton are also posting seasons that have them among FCS statistical leaders and earning national respect. Randolph still has the most statistical advantages, as he leads the nation in total offense and points responsible for and ranks second in passing yardage per game. Skelton leads the nation in passing yardage per game, and is in the top five in total offense and completions per contest. Curley has come into his own in recent weeks, and has posted back-to-back career highs in passing yardage. He is now in the FCS top 20 in passing yardage, total offense and completions per game, and leads all Patriot League quarterbacks and ranks seventh nationally with a 155.4 passing efficiency. Sullivan directs an offense that is third in the nation in rushing, but he's still found time for strong numbers himself with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions on the season, including nine TDs and no picks in Patriot League games. With Curley's Offensive Player of the Week selection on Monday, the four quarterbacks have combined to win eight of the nine Patriot League Offensive awards this season. Randolph, Skelton and Sullivan have also combined for six of the Patriot League's 10 weekly awards from national or regional outlets. Only Sullivan returns next year, as Randolph, Skelton and Curley are seniors.
Randolph Approaching More FCS Records
Holy Cross quarterback Dominic Randolph extended each of his career FCS records in the win over Fordham on Saturday: he threw a touchdown pass for the 38th straight game and passed for more than 200 yards for the 37th time. Earlier in the year, he matched an FCS record by notching 13 consecutive games with 300 yards of total offense. Randolph is also approaching two FCS career marks in major categories, as his 1,613 attempts are 67 shy of the record of 1,680 held by Steve McNair (Alcorn State, 1991-94) and Cal St. Northridge's Marcus Brady (1998-01) and his 1,025 completions are 97 off the record of 1,122 held by New Hampshire's Ricky Santos (2004-07). Randolph is in seventh place in FCS history in total offense (12,957), sixth in passing yardage (12,242), and tied for sixth in touchdown passes (109). He leads the Patriot League in nine different career categories: completions, attempts, passing yards, passing touchdowns, total offense, touchdowns responsible for (123), 300-yard passing games (22), 400-yard passing games (seven) and 400-yard games of total offense (nine).
Record-setting day in the Bronx
Holy Cross and Fordham played a shootout on Saturday that saw multiple Patriot League and FCS records fall, mostly coming from the Ram offense and quarterback John Skelton. Fordham set a Patriot League record with 112 plays, topping the previous mark of 102. Skelton's 82 plays (67 passes/15 rushes) were also a League mark, besting the record of 79. He set an FCS record with 39 plays in the fourth quarter, beating the mark of 33 set by current Lafayette assistant coach Mickey Fein when he played for Maine against Connecticut on Oct. 11, 1997. Skelton also tied an FCS record with 33 pass attempts in the period. Skelton was 43-of-67 for 427 yards without an interception in the game, finishing just one attempt shy of the FCS record for most attempts without an interception in a regulation game. The teams combined for 1,143 yards of total offense, with 516 for Holy Cross and 627 for Fordham. Neither team punted in the game, the first time that had happened in an FCS contest since Georgia Southern played James Madison on Nov. 15, 1986.
Patriot League Teams, Individuals At Top of FCS Stats
Patriot League offenses have put on impressive displays in the 2009 season, and the impact is certainly being felt on the NCAA leaderboard. A pair of senior quarterbacks have carved out spots as the best in the country, with Holy Cross' Dominic Randolph leading the nation in total offense and points responsible for per game and ranking second in passing yards per game. Fordham's John Skelton leads the FCS in passing yards per game, and is in the top five in total offense and completions. Both Holy Cross and Fordham are in the top five in passing and total offense. Colgate is third in the nation in rushing and leads the FCS in time of possession, where Lafayette ranks third. Holy Cross is first and Colgate is third in third-down conversion percentage.
