Sports Network FCS Players of the Week (Oct. 22)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - After stellar individual performances on Saturday, two Patriot League players have been selected as national weekly award winners by The Sports Network, the top media outlet for the Football Championship Subdivision.

Colgate junior quarterback Gavin McCarney was named the organization's FCS Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while Lehigh freshman defensive back Laquan Lambert garnered the FCS Special Teams Player of the Week award. It is the third straight week, and fourth in the last five, that at least one Patriot League player took home a national weekly award from The Sports Network.

Both players added honors later in the week. Each earned weekly awards from both College Sports Journal/GameWornUniforms.com and Metro New York Football Writers Association, while Lambert also took home the special teams honor from the ECAC.

McCarney had another outstanding performance as the Colgate offense continued to shine in a 57-36 win over Georgetown on Saturday. He completed 22-of-28 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns and also ran 15 times for 133 yards and two scores to rack up 510 of Colgate's school-record 707 yards on offense. McCarney is into the top five nationally in passing efficiency, scoring and points responsible for per game, and ranks 12th in the FCS in total offense.

Lambert had a pair of blocked punts, one which he returned 60 yards for a touchdown, as Lehigh made key special teams plays in a 42-19 win over Bucknell on Saturday. Lambert's block and touchdown return gave Lehigh a 7-0 lead, and his second blocked punt set the Mountain Hawks up at the Bucknell 15 for a touchdown that made it 21-6 in the second quarter. Lehigh blocked four kicks overall in the game, tying a Patriot League record.

The victory left Lehigh as one of two remaining undefeated teams in the FCS, and the Mountain Hawks moved up a spot in both national rankings as a result. Lehigh is now No. 6 in the FCS Coaches Poll while coming in at No. 8 in The Sports Network top 25. The No. 6/8 Mountain Hawks are 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League heading into their bye on Saturday.
