Holy Cross' Peter Pujals
Oct. 9, 2013
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - A sensational two weeks of play has landed Holy Cross quarterback Peter Pujals a spot on the watch list for the Jerry Rice Award, which goes to the FCS Freshman of the Year.
The Rice Award, now in its third season, goes to the top first-year player in the FCS, whether a true freshman or a redshirt freshman. Pujals is the first candidate out of the Patriot League since Lafayette running back Ross Scheuerman was on the ballot in 2011.
Pujals has burst on the scene by winning the last three Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards, and has put together two consecutive outstanding starts for the Crusaders. He completed 33-of-50 passes for 345 yards and four touchdowns without an interception in a 41-35 triple overtime loss to Harvard on Saturday, one week after he had 415 total yards and four total touchdowns in a 31-28 victory at Dartmouth. Pujals has completed 71-of-108 passes for 764 yards and eight touchdowns while rushing for 167 yards and two scores this season.
Pujals was one of three Patriot Leaguers named to the CFPA National FCS Freshman Performer of the Year Watch list last week, where he was joined by Bucknell running back CJ Williams and Fordham wide receiver/return specialist Jorge Solano.
The Sports Network announced its initial 20-player watch list for the 2013 Rice Award on Wednesday. Named for the legendary wide receiver, who played in the FCS (then Division I-AA) at Mississippi Valley State, the Rice Award will be voted on by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries following the regular season.
The initial position breakdown is five quarterbacks, five linebackers, three running backs, two wide receivers, two defensive ends, one cornerback, one safety and one punter.
The Rice Award Watch List can undergo revision during the season. The winner will be announced at The Sports Network FCS Awards Presentation Dec. 16 in Philadelphia, when the winners of the Walter Payton Award (Most Outstanding Player), Buck Buchanan Award (Top Defensive Player) and Eddie Robinson Award (Coach of the Year) will also be announced. Colgate senior quarterback Gavin McCarney and Fordham senior running back Carlton Koonce are currently on the watch list for the Walter Payton Award.

Pujals and the Crusaders have all of their Patriot League games remaining, beginning on Saturday when they visit Bucknell in a game shown on Patriot League Network.
