Junior linebacker Andy Romans was named Patriot League's Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 8 for his performance against Columbia. Romans totaled 13 tackles, including three for a loss of 17 yards, as part of a defense that held Columbia to -13 rushing yards. He contributed two sacks and a forced fumble against the Lions' offense.
Romans leads the Leopards' nationally ranked defense with 47 tackles in 2007. As a team, Lafayette rests first in the nation in total defense (210 yards per game) and scoring defense (8.8 ppg). Romans and his defensive mates also rank third in the NCAA in rushing defense, allowing a meager 63 yards per outing. For his career the 2006 All-Patriot League selection has made 164 tackles, tops among active players.
Lafayette's 29-0 shutout against Columbia earned them a spot in the FCS Coaches' Poll, after having dropped out two weeks ago. The Leopards are currently ranked 24th in the nation.
Lafayette (4-1) returns to action on Saturday at Harvard. Kick-off is set for 12 p.m.
