CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Four football student-athletes earned their first weekly award from the Patriot League on Saturday, including Colgate junior quarterback Gavin McCarney as the pick on offense after an outstanding game at Yale.
McCarney completed 17-of-22 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 85 yards and four scores to lead the Raiders to a 47-24 victory over the Bulldogs. He was joined as a weekly award winner by two student-athletes from Lehigh, as sophomore defensive lineman Tim Newton and senior placekicker Jake Peery were selected following the team's 34-31 win over Fordham. Newton had six tackles and two sacks to receive the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week award, while Peery hit the game-winning 22-yard field goal as time expired and was named Special Teams Player of the Week. Holy Cross freshman wide receiver/return specialist Kalif Raymond completes the list of honorees as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week after racking up 191 all-purpose yards against Harvard.
Honorable mention status went to Lehigh senior quarterback Michael Colvin, Lafayette junior wide receiver Mark Ross, Fordham senior quarterback Ryan Higgins and Bucknell sophomore linebacker Evan Byers.
Patriot League Football Weekly Awards (Sept. 28-29)
Offensive Player of the Week Gavin McCarney, QB, ColgateJr., 6-2, 205 (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township)
McCarney accounted for six touchdowns, including five in the first half alone, to lift Colgate to a 47-24 win at Yale on Saturday. The Preseason All-Patriot League quarterback completed 17-of-22 passes for a career-high 275 yards and two touchdowns without an interception and ran 14 times for 85 yards and four scores. His three rushing and two passing touchdowns in the first half gave Colgate a 35-17 lead at the break. He was 14-of-16 for 227 yards and ran for 58 yards in the half. McCarney stands fourth in the nation in points responsible for per game (18.00) and 15th in scoring (9.6). He is named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for the first time.
Defensive Player of the Week Tim Newton, DL, LehighSo., 6-5, 240 (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley)
Newton had six tackles and two sacks to help No. 11/15 Lehigh to a 34-31 win over Fordham in a Patriot League contest on Saturday. Newton set career highs in both categories. His first sack came late in the first half, and the nine-yard loss prevented Fordham from getting into field goal range. Newton is named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the first time.
Special Teams Player of the Week Jake Peery, K, LehighSr., 6-3, 175 (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley)
Peery nailed a game-winning 22-yard field goal as time expired to send No. 11/15 Lehigh to a 34-31 win over Fordham on Saturday. It was the Mountain Hawks' FCS-best 14th straight regular-season win, and the 15th in a row against a Patriot League opponent. Peery made both of his field goal attempts and all four of his extra points to finish with 10 points in the game. It was Lehigh's first game-winning field goal in 10 years. Peery has made three straight field goals and is 18-for-18 on extra points for the year. He is named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week for the first time.
Rookie of the Week Kalif Raymond, WR/RS, Holy CrossFr., 5-9, 157 (Lawrenceville, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian)
Raymond had a career-high 191 all-purpose yards in Holy Cross' 52-3 loss to Harvard on Saturday. He returned eight kickoffs for 156 yards and a pair of punts for 35 yards in the game. Raymond is named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the first time.
Honorable Mention Michael Colvin, QB, LehighSr., 6-3, 230 (Morristown, N.J./Morristown)
Colvin completed 24-of-40 passes for 341 yards and a touchdown and ran for 61 yards and a score in No. 11/15 Lehigh's 34-31 win over Fordham on Saturday. He had completions of 14 and 13 yards on the final drive to set up Lehigh's game-winning field goal as time expired.
Mark Ross, WR, LafayetteJr., 6-3, 215 (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell)
Ross had 13 receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns as Lafayette rallied from a 21-point deficit before falling 31-28 at Robert Morris on Saturday. The 13 receptions tied a school record and equaled the eighth-best mark in Patriot League history.
Ryan Higgins, QB, FordhamSr., 6-3, 210 (Merrick, N.Y./Chaminade)
Higgins completed 28-of-41 passes for 373 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a score in Fordham's 34-31 loss at Lehigh on Saturday.
Evan Byers, LB, BucknellSo., 6-0, 215 (Roaring Brook, Pa./Wyoming Seminary)
Byers had career highs with 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks in Bucknell's 15-10 loss to Cornell on Saturday.
